Story by Sherrad Glosson | Photo by Bernie LaFramboise

I’m sitting in a local café in downtown Ferndale, enjoying the ambiance. The vibe is nice and mellow, and it appears that this is a local spot where students come and relax to study before or after their next class. Others come and hold business meetings while eating a bagel, washing it down with a nice cup of cocoa, and some come to gather their thoughts accompanied by a book.

The door opens, and a kid enters. Another one for some quiet study? He looks like he’s in his early teens, with a backpack and a smile that gives you the impression that he’s completely harmless. It was at that moment when I realized that this is the kid whom people are raving about. None other than Tyler Beltz known around town as “Gonna’ Be Famous TB.”

Tyler is a self -motivated, driven kid who has been clear on his path to success since the age of 14. Now 18, has become one of the most elite individuals amongst his peers in the Ferndale area. At 14, Tyler started a web Show called the “Young Detroit Show,” designed to assist charity events at various churches, and to also show off local talent around the area. His goal was to be an outlet

to local songwriters, authors, and actors when the big corporate stations shut them down.

When asked of the roots of his ingenuity, he mentioned, “When I was younger I would use a hand brush and stand in front of the mirror as if I was interviewing someone.” That dream became a reality for him when he had the chance to interview big names such as Ryan Seacrest and Mike Posner. By the time he was 16, he landed an intern position at 98.7 AMP radio station, where he took calls. Not long after, people were calling just to talk to “that Kid Tyler.” Since then, he has worked himself up to the position of Board Operator.

On weekends, Tyler spends most of his time at Affirmations, where he works, but he also volunteers to help out when needed. He also acts as Affirmations’ social media guru. “Mr. Gonna Be Famous” also helps non-profit organizations and authors with consistent trafficking on their websites.

As far as his future goals are concerned, he has the dream of becoming a morning radio and television host.

Staying connected to the community and mentoring school kids about saying no to drugs is what he plans to do for the rest of his life.

If you haven’t heard of this rising star before, you surely will soon because he’s GONNA BE FAMOUS!

CARA TRAUTMAN ISN’T an angel. She just played one on stage. The lead actor in Angels in America, which finished its run at the Ringwald Theater in Ferndale, Trautman admits it was a more serious role than she’s accustomed to, although drama roles are growing on her. In addition to her work at the Ringwald, she performs and teaches improv comedy at Ferndale’s Go Comedy and Planet Ant in Hamtramck. She’s also an author, just having self-published her first novel, Happy’ish. She’s finished a children’s book, and is already working on another novel. She co-founded Detroit Card Company, writing cards for all occasions while a friend illustrates, and they just had their first major sale. She does all of this while maintaining a nine-to-five job at her father’s architecture firm.

I first saw Cara perform with long-time friend Lauren Bickers as Dubalicious at the Ringwald during an improv comedy festival over the summer. What separated their troupe from the others is the fact that Dubaclicious only had two members, while the other troupes each had six. “With only two people, there’s no time to stop and think—you just have to act”, Cara said. “You don’t have a moment to second guess yourself, or stop to think if something is funny or not. You’re totally in the moment.”

Cara first started her improv career at Second City in Detroit in 2000, where she first met improv partner Lauren, and they acted as understudies for the main ensemble. They also worked at the Improv Inferno in Ann Arbor, and have been performing at Go Comedy in Ferndale since it opened in 2008.

I asked Cara what percentage of the improv characters we see on stage are completely made up on the spot, and how many have shown up in previous shows, practices, or are based on charismatic people she’s met in real life.

“None, never, they’re all made up. Sometimes I’ll choose an emotion for a scene. This is what I’m teaching right now. I’m going to be angry in this scene, I don’t know what’s going to happen, but let’s see where this goes. If (you try to plan) something, it doesn’t usually work. All good humor is organic. Being in the moment is key.”

IF YOU’RE INTERESTED in trying your hand at improv comedy acting, you can take six to eight weeks of classes along with other beginners. “They have a great training center and we have a lot of students. We get engineers, moms, all kinds of different people. The majority are not actors, or even plan on acting. Even if they’re nervous, it feeds into their performance and it’s really enjoyable to watch. It’s a great, creative, and supportive environment. I learn from watching them and becoming part of the beginning process again.”

Cara’s recently released a book, Happy’ish, which is a new medium for her. Citing her literary influences as Jhumpa Lahiri, Barbara Kingsolver, Alexander McCall Smith, Elizabeth Gilbert, and Dave Eggers, she describes the plot of her first book as “A funny story about an awkwardly cool woman trying to find happiness and maybe even love in Ferndale, Michigan”, and it is only partially based on her. She brings her improv attitude to writing as well. “I develop these characters and see what happens. A fairly normal, grounded woman, surrounded by weirdos, just living. That’s the whole happy’ish thing. She doesn’t have it all together.” She’s already finished a children’s book, and she’s currently working on her second novel, which is set in Frankenmuth.

If you are interested in learning more about Cara, reading her book, or asking her questions about for her improv classes, she can be contacted at: caratrautman@wordpress.com

Happy’ish is available at Amazon. com

By Robert Littleton, Manager, Magic Bag Theater

With heavy hearts and minds, The Magic Bag is sad to announce the loss of one of its founding members, Jeremy Haberman.

Jeremy was a visionary, one of Detroit’s best promoters, and a successful businessman. A record store employee in his youth, (at Sam’s Jams in Ferndale) he had extensive knowledge in all genres of music. He took over a struggling theater and transformed it into a nationally- celebrated music venue, nearly 20 years running. As a kid growing up in Detroit’s University District, he listened to the radio non-stop and took in the back-beat sounds of the neighborhood. He had fond memories performing with his college band Soulstice and often times doted on his early success as a musician. His love for music and the Detroit music scene was unparalleled.

Always modest, he took great pleasure helping and watching local acts grow from the opening band on the bill to the main attraction. Bands like the White Stripes, Electric Six, and Detroit Cobras were fostered by Jeremy. He was also a noted tastemaker, bringing in national artists that were on their way to stardom. Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Amy Schumer, and The Black Keys are just a few notables that got their first breaks at The Magic Bag. He loved the rhythm & blues, roots rock, and the old-school musicians who influenced everything you hear today. Legends like Bo Diddley, Los Lobos, and Leon Russell all found a home at The Magic Bag.

Jeremy will long be remembered for his big heart, his quick wit and jovial personality, his love for the Detroit Tigers, and his love for family and friends.

Story by Jason Shubnell

Marijuana has become one of the hottest topics in America the last few years. Newspaper and URL headlines are filled with drug-related puns, but the growing legality of marijuana is very real.

“I do think that public perception of marijuana, as well as criminal laws, are out of tune with the reality of things,” said attorney Matthew Abdo, a Ferndale resident. Abdo is a criminal defense attorney with more than 2,000 court appearances in the last five years. Drug crimes, marijuana in particular, are a large part of his practice. Along with colleague Matthew LaGrasso, they specialize in defending clients in medical marijuana cases.

Voters in Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Washington D.C. have already passed measures allowing the legalization of recreational marijuana. Twenty-three additional states now allow for medicinal marijuana.

MSU’s States News recently reported on the latest marijuana polls, which show a “growing number of residents agree that, in Michigan, marijuana should be taxed and regulated the same way as alcohol.”

A recent SurveyUSA poll (sponsored by the Michigan Medical Marijuana Report) of 500 state residents showed that 64 percent of Michigan citizens would vote “yes” on a ballot proposal that would tax and regulate the drug to increase school and road funding.

Marijuana is currently decriminalized by the city of Ferndale if you’re over 21 and have a limited amount (one ounce or less) for personal use in your home. This is very similar to the statewide law In Colorado.

Ann Arbor, Flint, Grand Rapids, Ypsilanti, Jackson and Kalamazoo have passed laws to decriminalize small amounts or reduce the penalties for marijuana possession. Late last year, Berkley, Huntington Woods, Mount Pleasant, Port Huron and Saginaw also joined the list.

Screen Shot 2015-02-17 at 7.45.45 AM

When asked if marijuana should be legalized, Abdo says that he be- lieves that Michigan residents just simply aren’t ready for the legaliza- tion of medical and recreational marijuana.

“Though medical marijuana was passed by the voters by a majority, it is still not very popular with government institutions. The trend seems to be accept- ing the medical piece before outright legalization,” he said. “Unfortunately, the Michigan Marijuana Act has turned a lot of growers into felons because they’ve just slightly failed to follow the law. I do not believe that was the law’s intention, nor do I think that is the best use of taxpayer dollars to prosecute.”

Back in December, legislation that would have allowed for the legal return and regulation of medical marijuana dispensaries in Michigan fizzled. As reported by Mlive, “House Bill 4271, approved a year ago by the lower chamber, wrapped up the 2013-14 session… without acting on the measure.”

“It’s hard to admit when you’re wrong,” Alan Brochstein, one of the leading marijuana stock analysts in the country, told me last year. “(The U.S. government) has to have a graceful exit (from the war on drugs.) Just think about how long it took to get out of Vietnam.” Brochstein has an educational product, 420 Investor, on Marketfy.com which teaches people about investing in marijuana-related stocks.

The state of Colorado recently wrapped up its first full year of marijuana legalization. The state is on track to collect almost $50 million in taxes and fees for 2014 on sales of at least $500 million.

Speaking about Michigan, Abdo said, “In a state strapped for money, I think putting thought into making it part of a solid licensing system, revenue, and tax stream is something worth putting thought into.”

Nanci Frazier, director of Motor City Ferrets, will be the first to tell you that ferrets are not easy pets. But don’t let this fool you; she believes they are worth every moment of trouble. And she speaks from experience; since opening Motor City Ferrets, Nanci and co-director Alex Oeming have personally saved over 1,000 ferrets.

Motor City Ferrets is a registered non-profit shelter and rescue service in Hazel Park, run out of Nanci and Alex’s home. Currently, the shelter has thirty critters available for adoption, and can have anywhere between 20-50 ferrets at a time. The ferrets all receive personal attention and play time. Most of the basement of the house has been transformed into a safe, warm, clean play area for the ferrets (and ferret owners.) Safe, spacious cages line one wall. The floor is easy-to-clean linoleum, scattered with tubes (ferrets love to crawl through tubes) and other toys; tubs and open cages lined with blankets and ferret hammocks provide places to rest.

Although MCF comes first in Nanci and Alex’s lives, both work outside of the home to help fund the rescue. Nanci has worked many jobs, including organizer and office worker. Alex is a science teacher. The shelter is a non-profit and can be quite costly to operate, so donations (monetary and supplies) are always welcomed and appreciated.

Because it is a private residence, the shelter does not have regular business hours. Instead, they offer private adoption events and personal appointments for interested adopters. Keeping the shelter’s address private helps prevent people from dropping off unwanted ferrets in dangerous conditions; for example, 3:00 A.M. on a frigid night. While Nanci and Alex are happy to take in surrenders, they don’t want to risk animals getting sick or hurt while unattended on their porch.

Nanci wants everyone to know that ferrets are domesticated animals and thus, “they have no clue how to survive in the wild.” They’ve lost the instinct to hunt and cannot fend for themselves; the average ferret released into the wild won’t last a week. If you see a ferret loose outside, please contact Motor City Ferrets immediately. Ferrets also lack the ability to find their way home. If they get out, it’s unlikely they’ll come back. Due to their flexible bodies, ferrets can squeeze through tiny openings; Nanci says that dryer vents are a common means of escape.

On the other hand, ferrets are fun, gentle, social animals, and it’s a real blast to watch them play. Most well-socialized ferrets love to cuddle and play. Just be careful of loose objects; if a ferret likes it, they’ll likely steal it and drag it off somewhere to hide. While ferrets may sleep up to 20 hours a day, they’re very active while awake, and taking them out of their cages to roam and play (in a safe, ferret-proofed area) is a must. Nanci often describes ferrets to a would-be parents as a cross between kittens and human toddlers. In other words, ferrets are positively adorable and a true delight to be around, but they can also be a great big handful!

Motor City Ferrets offers a lot for ferret fans. In addition to adoptions, MCF offers temporary boarding and many ferret supplies for sale. Miss Sophie’s Weezily Wares, the ferret specialty shop operated by MCF, sells a variety of cages and accessories. Handmade blankets, beds, cleaners and ferret-themed gifts are all available. 100% of proceeds go towards vet bills and other operating costs of the rescue. Regardless of where you got your ferret, visit the shop for inexpensive but high quality supplies.

When you adopt from a specialized shelter, you gain access to experts on your new pet. Nanci has owned ferrets for nearly two decades. Within that time, she has seen most of the health and behavioral problem that ferrets can have and has met specialized veterinarians in the area. Nanci and Alex like to keep in touch with adopters to make sure the ferrets are healthy and the owners are happy. The Motor City Ferret Facebook group has over 1,000 members posting pictures, questions and stories daily. From health concerns to silly home videos, the group is supportive of ferret fans everywhere.

Interested in becoming a ferret owner? Nanci strongly suggests reading “Ferrets for Dummies” first or perusing the Facebook page to see what a ferret family experiences. Visit the MCF page at www.motorcityferrets.org to learn about open houses, adoption events and more about the organization. The rescue can be reached at motorcityferrets@hotmail.com, or 248-219-9023.

“They told me I wasn’t going to be able to walk anymore. I had a heart attack, a diabetic attack, a slight stroke and a 28 percent chance of living,” William Vaughn told me while sitting in his home.

Vaughn was a mortgage broker and real estate agent for 30 years, with over 40 employees working for him, before becoming ill. After recovering, he planned to start up a company again, but the laws about real estate credentials had changed. He couldn’t be licensed without a high school diploma. So now, at the tender age of 93, William Vaughn is a Ferndale High School student, rubbing elbows with peers young enough to be his great-great- grandchildren.

“This generation is different than what I’m used to. I’ve been around a long time and have never seen a generation like the one we have now. I know I can’t skip days and not do the work, because if I do I know I won’t pass.” Vaughn finds that the curriculum has changed from how it was when he was last in school. “It’s tougher,” he admits, than it used to be, and there are things to learn now that people didn’t have to learn back in the day. He studies every day of the week just to keep the new information fresh in his brain.

Long ago, Vaughn dropped out of high school to go into the military, and planned to go back after he served his country. But he’d gotten married to his first wife and had a son. Getting a high school diploma took a back seat to taking care of his family.

“If you don’t use your brain, it will deteriorate. If you sit around and do nothing, your mind will settle down to that, and it will be hard for you to concentrate” stated William. It’s a quote from his oldest son that keeps him motivated. “I wasn’t expected to do anything again after my illness, and I was tired of doing nothing. I made a point in my mind that I didn’t want to be a couch potato. Once you run a business and be successful, you don’t want to be dead anymore.”

As of now, William Vaughn is the oldest person to attend Ferndale High in school history, and is living proof that no matter what age you are, you can still attain your dreams and reach your goals. The school curriculum may be challenging to him right now, but William is determined to keep going until he has completed his mission and be back working within the mortgage and real estate business. He plans to finish by his 94th birthday, in August 2015.

Better late than never!

When you live in a city of twenty thousand individuals, and that city is one like Ferndale, full of vigor and ideas and individual spirit, being singled out as “Citizen of the Year” is a pretty special accomplishment. But for those of you who know Jeannie Davis, such an award doesn’t go nearly far enough. After all, she’s one in a million. At least. And luckily, she’s all ours.

Jeannie, Ferndale’s own super citizen, was honored with the 2014 Citizen of the Year Award, presented by the Elks club on October 22, during their annual Law and Order night.

How popular is Jeannie? Well, traditionally, the Mayor presents the Citizen of the Year Award, but this time, there was a bit of a good-natured scuffle. In the end, the award was co-presented by Mayor Coulter, Mayor Pro Tem Dan Martin, and Councilman Greg Pawlica. We understand, guys. Everyone wants to be seen with Jeannie.

“I was honored to be selected.” Jeannie says. “I love Ferndale, it has been so good to me, providing me with a wonderful ex- tended family. The least I can do is pay (it) back.”

Goedert, who served three terms as Mayor from 1996 to 2001, was just elected to a six-year term as Judge of the 43rd District Court in Hazel Park this past November 4. It’s a position he was originally appointed to in 2010 by former Governor Jennifer Granholm, succeeding retiring Judge Robert Turner. He was re-elected in 2012. His new, full term will run through the end of 2020.

Goedert has many fond memories of his time as Ferndale mayor, and is proud of his accomplishments. From Honorable Mayor to simply “Your Honor”, I asked Goedert what he remembers, and what he hopes to do in his important new position.

“(When I served as Ferndale’s Mayor,) we worked very hard to revitalize the downtown and our residential neighborhoods, to make city hall more open and honest, and to stabilize the budget.” Goedert says. “As a judge, I’m working hard to handle large dockets, be fair and do justice, and to protect families and public safe- ty.”

Goedert also pointed out that, even though he is now serving Hazel Park, being in the 43rd District will keep him well-connected to his old city. “For civil cases, we’re a three-city district.” He explains. That means that issues like landlord-tenant disputes from Madison Heights, Ferndale, or Hazel Park may be heard by any judge in the district. Criminal matters, on the other hand, are specific to the city in question.

So, if you go to Hazel Park’s 43rd District Court, you might see a familiar face judging your case.

2003 Ferndale Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year, Board Member on the Chamber of Commerce, the Ferndale Community Foundation, the Midwest AIDS Prevention Project, multiple awards for beautification… impressive accomplishments. But there’s more to Tom Pearlman, as I learned when I sat down with him recently. Active in the business and cultural community for years, Tom was kind enough to share his Ferndale stories. Afterward, I wanted nothing more than a guided walking tour!

Tom originally sublet his office space from filmmakers Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead). He doesn’t envy the roller coaster ride of film making. “I like stability” he admitted, smiling. His secretary Doris, 86, retired recently after 30 years with Tom. Kimmi, who’s with him now, has worked for Tom for 20 years. They are steps away from Soho, the popular club he owns with his partner of 30 years, John Kalina. Tom started buying commercial property at a time when there were sellers and no buyers. He could keep rents down because his costs were low. When I mentioned his longevity in a difficult business, he said “It helps that I have no debt. I’m fearful of debt.” I expressed my envy and admiration. “It takes a lot of discipline.”

Tom is a Detroit/Birmingham native. His mother, a recently retired schoolteacher, and his father, an artist, worked in the restaurant business. Tom started practicing law in 1981, but stopped when the real estate business took off.

He bought his first club 20-plus years ago – “3-D,” on North Main Street in Royal Oak. 3-D won the first “Best of…” from the Metro Times. It was a “do-it-yourself” project. He now has a great group of tradespeople who help him care for his properties. He spoke of being an attorney by day and club owner by night, a grueling schedule that changed when he and John adopted sons Noah and Adam. The family lives in Orchard Lake. He sometimes regrets they’re not being raised in a town where you get to know the neighbors and “have to be home before the streetlights come on.” Tom and John do make them part of the Ferndale community, including them in business and town events.

The histories of the buildings John has acquired are fascinating. There’s the Field Art Studio, left full of art materials when the owner walked away. The “Balloon Factory,” which houses Detroit Wallpaper and artist studios. The bar Wink was once a Winkelman’s department store. “I love when you buy an old building and discover incredible features once you start fixing it up.” Tom says. He visits the Ferndale Historical Museum when he is buying a property to learn its history. He enjoys working with young entrepreneurs who “bring their spirit to the place. They generally come with limited income, but a lot of creativity.” We discussed the gay community and artists who took a chance on Ferndale, a town people generally “skipped over” when they moved up and out of Detroit. He spoke of how hard local business owners work to survive. He likes working with people as their business grows. “We help them transition. Keep it in the family.”

On “progress” versus keeping a diverse, small town intact: “It’s important to deal with change in a delicate way.” Tom is concerned about efforts to limit the town’s creative freedom. “Why put a damper on creativity? Let them paint their storefront purple if that’s what suits their business. Let people express themselves. That’s what makes Ferndale fun.”

The best and brightest local individuals and businesses were honored at the Ferndale and Oak Park Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Awards and Recognition Gala on November 14. The Gala was held at the Twist Night Club, and presented by Gage Products Company of Ferndale and Paramount Precision Products of Oak Park.

The event lived up to its “gala” billing, with entertainers, strolling waitresses with appetizers, a silent auction featuring products and services donated by over 90 area businesses and individuals, and the opportunity to rub elbows with the smart, driven, and just plain friendly folks of the Ferndale and Oak Park business community. A bar overflowed with chips, salsa, and hummus donated by Garden Fresh Gourmet while a string quartet played softly in the glow of decorative lights.

“The Artist in You” was the theme of this year’s event. The CoC announced the Art Mural Project, in which the work of two sophomore, two junior, and two senior students from Ferndale High School will be chosen for outdoor display at various locations in Ferndale. Chosen students also have the opportunity to pick up scholarship money. Photos of young Ferndale High School artists were shown on TVs, and a selection of their work was available for viewing at the Gala.

The highlight of the evening, of course, was the awards ceremony. The winners of each category were:

  • Business Person of the Year: Dean Bach (Dino’s Lounge and M Brew).
  • New Business of the Year: Michigan Youth Arts (Marianne Dorais).
  • Special Service Award: Jack Aronson (Garden Fresh Gourmet).
  • Best of Ferndale: Tie between Rust Belt Market (Chris and Tiffany Best) and Ferndale Friends
  • Best of Oak Park: Tai Fai Restaurant (Bonnie Deng).
  • Volunteer of the Year: Rita Van Keymuelen (Creative Office Designs).

As a member of the Ferndale Friends team, I am, of course very excited about winning the “Best of Ferndale” award. It’s especially humbling when you consider the fine businesses and organizations we were up against.
