Saturday, June 13

It’s April, the weather is warming, spring has finally arrived, and people all over Ferndale are tackling that dreaded chore: Cleaning the garage, basement, or attic. Where did all this stuff come from, and how do I get rid of it easily?

We all have extra stuff. Here is a solution which will help you and your city as well. Pack everything up, call the Ferndale Department of Recreation, and arrive at Ferndale City Hall a little before 9:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 13.

The Trunk & Treasure Sale is definitely your answer. The price is $15 for a parking space- size area for you to sell your goods. Once you have unpacked and set up, you are free to wander and gawk at what the other 39 vendors are offering. As you stroll, you will find garden stuff, plants, books, jewelry, furniture, electronics, crafts, and more.

Under the overhang of City Hall is senior territory! The Ferndale Seniors have been gathering, sorting, and pricing donated items. Their goal every year is to sell everything, so their prices start very low, and as the day wears on, they get downright silly.

At the library end of the parking lot, Ed Burns rules the library book sale, with thousands of books at bargain basement prices. He has everything from pretty coffee table books, to novels by popular authors, to nonfiction.

The Ferncare Garage Sale is just down the street in their parking lot across from the Credit Union. They always have a unique assortment of goodies at reasonable prices, and proceeds go to supporting their clinic.

Is all this making you hungry? Dino’s has their food truck set up, and is permeating the air with the savory smell of barbeque. Still hungry for something sweet? Whenever there are seniors around, there is a bake sale! Our darling little ladies have been baking and concocting for a few days, and the results with certainly entice you.

While we are considering the seniors, their white elephant sale is entirely from donations, and the funds go to further their programs. If you don’t have enough stuff to rent a parking space, consider calling me, and donating it to the seniors for their sale.

So, you can get rid of your old stuff, get some new stuff (after all, you now have room for it), stroll, meet your neighbors, be out in the sunshine, and have a delightful lunch. Not a bad deal!

Call Ferndale Recreation at 248-544-6767. They can help you secure your spot.

Want to donate to the Senior Sale? Call Jeannie Davis at 248-541-5888.

In its 53rd year, the 2015 Michigan Youth Arts Festival (MYAF) is a multidisciplinary arts spectacular, highlighting the achievements of the state’s best performing and fine artists at the high school level. The event will take place May 7 to 9 on the campus of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. All musical concerts, theater performances, visual art exhibits, and film screenings will be free of charge and open to the public.

“The Michigan Youth Arts Festival honors the best artistic talent in the state, at both the student and professional level,” said Marianne Dorais, Executive Director of Michigan Youth Arts. “Arts education leads to increased creativity, higher graduation rates, and greater aspirations, and Michigan Youth Arts is proud to play a role in the artistic development of these young people.”

To be invited to MYAF as a participant, Michigan high school students must earn the highest scores throughout yearlong adjudications, coordinated by Michigan Youth Arts’ statewide partner associations. The top 1,000 students, who are carefully chosen from a pool of more than 250,000 applicants, are then invited to the Festival, where they showcase their work and attend discipline-specific master classes led by renowned industry professionals. Additionally, the Festival’s Friday night Gala Concert will be accompanied by the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony.

“Michigan Youth Arts is honored to host this annual event because it not only encourages artistic excellence at the high school level, but also creates an awareness of the importance of art in the lives of Michigan residents,” said Dorais. “The extraordinary talent of our Distinguished Scholars, whether as vocalists, actors, dancers, musicians or artists, is something of which the entire state can be proud.”

There’s no better childhood memory than riding your bike around the neighborhood with friends after school. The summer breeze that flows across your face while riding a bike is like no other. For more than seven years the Ferndale Recreation Department, Rotary Club, Police and Fire Department has been helping the community get ready for bike season, and 2015 is no different. Ferndale’s Annual Bike Rodeo will take place on Saturday, June 6 from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. at Ferndale High School. It’s designed for children to come and learn about the safety, and fun, of riding a bike.

“In the past several years we have put this event on in conjunction with our youth day softball opening day.” says Jill Manchik, recreation director. An opening day ceremony at the high school has been planned on June 6 as well.

The Bike Rodeo will have its usual activities including: a free bike skills test provided by the police department; free bike inspection provided by Downtown Ferndale Bikes; free bike helmets (kids must bring bike for free helmet) provided by the Rotary Club; free bike license (for Ferndale residents only), and a free fire safety house tour, pending the fire department’s availability.

This year the Recreation Department welcomes sponsors that want to give away food and drink to attendants (sponsors are not permitted to sell products).

For more information about Bike Rodeo visit www.ferndalemi.gov or contact Jill Manchik at jmanchik@ferndalemi.gov.

Drayton Avenue Co-op Preschool (DACP) invites the local community to attend its 23rd Annual Silent Auction, themed “Get Greek, a Toga Party!” This adult-only event, our biggest fundraiser of the year, will be held on Friday, April 24 from 6:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. at Drayton Avenue Presbyterian Church at 2441 Pinecrest in Ferndale

Advance tickets are $10 per person and available by calling (586) 260-7218, or they can be purchased at the door on the night of the event for $15 per person. Guests will enjoy live performances from local musicians, as well as appetizers and adult beverages donated by local restaurants.

Bidding on Silent Auction items will begin at 6:00 P.M. with staggered ending times. Local businesses and artists, Michigan businesses, as well as international names, including Walt Disney World, The Henry Ford, and Trader Joe’s are some of the donors providing a wide variety of goods to bid on.

Fundraising and donations help keep tuition low for DACP’s unique, high-quality educational program. Drayton Avenue Co-op Preschool was established in 1949 as a non-profit, play-based cooperative preschool for children ages 2 to 4. It is a non-denominational organization that welcomes children of any race, sex, creed or national origin.

As DACP relies on parents and caregivers to volunteer in the classroom alongside the teacher, it is a tight-knit community where lifelong friendships are forged between families. With a strong tradition that spans more than 60 years, the continued success of DACP depends on community support, as well as new families joining the program.

For more information about DACP’s 23rd Annual Silent Auction, contact co-chair Kim Hart at (586) 260-7218 or kimi.hart@hotmail.com. Details about the event and auction items can also be found on the Drayton Avenue Co-op Preschool facebook page or at www.draytonpreschool.org.

It all started in 1985 on an athletic track in Tacoma, Washington. Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran around the track for 24 hours, raising $27,000 for the American Cancer society. A year later, supporters joined him and the event began to grow. Today, Relay for Life events are held in hundreds of cities around the world. Throughout its history, Relay for Life has raised awareness of cancer, given people a way to connect with fellow patients, survivors, caregivers, and supporters, and raised $5 billion for cancer research. Today, organized by the American Cancer Society, companies and individuals form teams and raise money, the goal being to have someone from their team running or walking the track for the duration of the event.

I spoke to Michele Sibula and Christina Linn of the ACS about this year’s event. The first thing to know is that this year’s relay is at a new location, Martin Road Park, located at 1615 East Lewiston Avenue. “More public access, new neighborhoods.” Christina smiles. Event leadership teams can customize Relays to fit a particular city, and Ferndale’s promises to be fun and unique.

Ferndale’s Relay will run for 14 hours, from 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 13 until the stroke of midnight to welcome in Sunday, June 14. Registration opens at 10:00 A.M. Opening ceremonies begin at 11:00 A.M. with a survivor speaker, music from the choir and the presentation of the colors. As the race begins, the first lap goes to the survivors, celebrating another year of having beaten cancer, while those who have been by their side cheer them on along the sidelines. Then the caregivers take their turn, then the teams take the track. But there’s much more to do than just walking or running around. There will also be a “kids zone,” with activities for the whole family, including bounce houses, games, and entertainment.

In the afternoon, there will be a “fight back” ceremony, inspiring people to take action and make a commitment to fight cancer for themselves, for their loved ones, and for the community. You can make a pledge, for example, to eat healthier, or make a donation, or to remind family members to get screened. There will be speakers with inspirational stories of survival as well.

You can also learn more about ACS CAN, the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network, the lobbying and legislative arm of the ACS. ACS CAN has scored numerous victories for public health, including banning smoking in public facilities.
There will be a silent auction as well, with proceeds supporting the ACS and its work. Individuals or companies interested in donating items for the auction may contact Christina at the email address below.

As dusk comes on, the always-moving Luminaria Ceremony begins. In it, we take the time to remember the people who have fought well but lost their battle to cancer, those who have battled cancer in the past, and to support those who are still fighting it. Candles are lit and set in each individual personal bag that has a special message, a picture, or a person’s name. A bagpiper will lead the lap around the track. Luminaries may be purchased on the spot for a $10 donation.

Cancer does not discriminate. It has no mercy. Relay for Life is one of the ways to even the score, to do something positive to fight this dreadful disease, and bring on the day when cancer is beaten for all. Victors, not victims!

For more info on how to donate or participate, please contact Christina Linn at (248) 663-3454 or e-mail christina.linn@cancer.org

FERNDALE PRIDE IS ONE OF Metro Detroit’s most famous and beloved events, and this year’s celebration is set to be especially dynamic. Recognizing the diverse LGBTQ+ community and their allies, Ferndale Pride aims to be an inclusive, friendly and electrifying event for everyone involved. Blending Ferndale residents, visitors, and various performers, Ferndale Pride will have something for everyone: captivating entertainers, eclectic vendors, and artists of all kinds are just some of the things to look forward to at this year’s celebration. The same weekend, attendees can participate in the fun, annual “Rainbow Run.” (The events are organized separately.)

Attendees can look forward to a street fair that brings together many different local flavors, with Pride on Saturday May 30 and the Rainbow Run Sunday June 1, from Noon to 9:00 P.M. the streets will be filled with performers representing a diverse group of tastes and talents. Stages will display continuous music lineups planned for entertainment and dancing. While the music plays, you can peruse the shopping areas. From local businesses to independent artists, exploring the vendor tables will be a great way to find gifts and other unique items not found anywhere else. A wide variety of food and drinks will also be served for everyone involved.
Ferndalepride.com will have a complete calendar-list of events prior to the lively weekend.

On Saturday morning, runners, walkers, and spectators alike can join in the fun of the Rainbow Run, a standout Pride event. Registered participants get a white T-shirt, and at different stations along the course, volunteers pelt the runners with colorful powder, so that at the end, you’re wearing a rainbow! All proceeds from the ‘Run will go to local nonprofit organizations, so you can make a difference while making a mess. The ‘Run is family-friendly and you can bring your littlest walkers / runners in strollers, but no dogs, please. Registration is still open for the 2K Fun Run or 5K Walk. There will be a kick-off balloon launch at 1:00 PM in honor of the late Kevin Rogers, followed by the awarding of charitable grants by the Ferndale Community Foundation.

Do you want to get involved with Ferndale Pride? Though the main Pride event takes place the last weekend of May, there will be a number of fundraising opportunities before then, in and around the city, where profits will go to supplementing the costs of putting on the weekend-long celebration. Currently, ‘Pride Planning Meetings’ are being held at Affirmations for anyone wanting to help with the organizing of the event. The dates for the meetings are April 21, May 6 and May 27.
Register to be part of the Rainbow Run at Rainbow-Run.com. Visit FerndalePride.com to see sponsorship and volunteer opportunities. Volunteering positions include greeters, information distributors, stagehands, and more. Sponsoring Pride weekend has a variety of benefits at many different levels. Anchored in the midst of a patch of industrious steel and stone, resting before the train tracks on the corner of Woodward Heights and Horton Street, you might be surprised to find a colorful and emi- nent dance studio. But here lies The Institution of Dance Arts, or IDA. Inside the cordial lobby waits a café-like countertop guarding rows of little black chairs for kids to sit, eat and draw. Once inside the bright vanilla decor of the main studio, a spacious and speck- less space popping with the movements of dancers of all ages, I meet with the owner and main instructor, Ida Lowback and she cheerfully grants me an interview.

At IDA, Lowback explains, they investigate dance as an art form and explore the instinctual need for movement. Students are given the freedom and security to explore their creativity. IDA’s profession- al and dedicated dance educators provide their students not only with the knowledge of dance movement, vocabulary, and history, but also with skill sets that will enhance their lives outside of dance. Offering classes in all genres to all ages and levels within a safe, nurturing, and educational environment, allow them to create life- long dancers who appreciate the art of movement.

FERNDALE FRIENDS: WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO SETTLE ON FERNDALE TO OPEN YOUR STUDIO?

IDA LOWBACK: I was born and raised in Royal Oak and grew up dancing throughout Oakland County. I always knew that when I started my own studio I wanted it close to home and in a culturally rich community. I was surprised to learn that Ferndale, being such an artistic and creative area, had no traditional dance studio (ballet,

jazz, tap, etc.) and so it was a perfect opportunity. Since we opened in September the community has been extremely welcoming and I have loved getting to know it and its residents; so much so I just purchased a house here!

FF: WHAT HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE BEEN LIKE TEACHING SO MANY DIFFERENT PEOPLE DANCE IN SUCH A COLORFUL CITY?

IL: It has been a pleasure. Dance is a universal language and brings people together. The people of Ferndale are known for being open-minded and community-oriented, and so teaching dance here has been both an exciting and rewarding experience.

FF: CONCERNING YOUR STUDIO AND ITS FUTURE, ARE THERE ANY GOALS OR PLANS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE ACHIEVED?

IL: My long-term goal for the studio is for it to become a cultural cornerstone of Ferndale and a second home for its students. A dance studio is successful when it becomes closely ingrained with its surrounding community and creates a space where students feel free and safe to share and explore the wonders of movement. My goal is that our students find an emotional outlet and a vehicle for personal development that guides them throughout their lives. I am confident that if I invest myself in my students, staff, and community, I can achieve this goal.

The Institution of Dance Arts is located at 701 Woodward Heights, Suite 130. Phone 248-697-2200 or visit their website at www.theinstitutionofdancearts.org

In partnership with Baker College, Ferndale Schools will launch its Early College starting next year. Students at both Fern- dale High School and University High School will be eligible for the program and the chance to earn a free Associate’s Degree fromBaker.

An Early College is a program within a school that allows for students to earn both high school and college credit at the same time (up to 60 total transferable credits and/or an Associate’s Degree) and includes a “fifth year” of high school, with the majority of courses in the last year held on the college partner campus (also known as “13th Year”). The college credits earned while in the Early College are completely free to students.

“Ferndale Schools couldn’t be more excited to offer such a great program like our new Early College. Research shows that Early College students are significant- ly more likely to graduate from high school and are significantly more likely to earn a college degree than comparison students. Being able to offer 60 college credits to our students for free is a great opportunity for our families,” said Ferndale Schools Board of Education President Jim O’Donnell

As part of the Early College, students will have a choice of four pathways for an Associate’s Degree awarded from Baker College; Computer Programming, Criminal Justice (in partnership with the Ferndale Police Department, which includes Police Academy option after 13th year), Marketing, and Health Sciences. Students who apply for the program and are accepted will choose their pathway in their sophomore year. Courses can start as early as 9th or 10th grade, with the formal program begin- ning in the 11th grade year; courses include general course work and specific pathway electives.

“Baker College of Auburn Hills is pleased to be selected as Ferndale’s higher education partner in this exciting Early College initiative. As Michigan’s largest independent post-secondary institution, Baker College has a long history of successfully preparing students for employable careers. We are excited to be able to bring these opportunities to the students of Ferndale through this innovative program,” said Pete Karsten, Campus President, Baker College of Auburn Hills.

As part of the agreement between Ferndale Schools and Baker College, there is also an opportunity for students not enrolled in the Early College to earn some college credit. So while this is a fantastic opportunity for students who enroll in the Early College, it is also a chance for all students to accelerate their futures.

It’s six months later and we are just nearing 100 percent after the GreatFlood of 2014. Like many residents and businesses in Ferndale, the Police Department and City Hall were severely impacted by the unprecedented flooding this past August.

During the worst of the flooding, Lt. O’Loughlin of the Ferndale Police Department said that water was, “shooting four feet into the air from every plumbing fixture in the basement”. Nasty sewer water rose to approximately three and one-half feet in the basement, severely impacting operations and equipment.

The flood water entered the department’s IT room, fatally damaging our 911 system, regular telephone system, and radio system, as well as many other computer and IT components. Initial estimates to repair or replace the damaged equipment quickly rose to north of one-half million dollars.

Flood waters also invaded the men’s and women’s locker rooms, shooting range, weight room, evidence room, and department armory. The majority of our officers lost uniforms, leather gear, cold weather gear, and significant amounts of personal property.

Most of the department’s weapons were submerged for several hours and each pistol and rifle had to be meticulously cleaned, lubricated, and function checked before going back on the street. Several thousand rounds of ammunition were submerged and rendered unreliable for use on duty.

All of the equipment in our gym had to be rehabbed or replaced. Numerous piec- es of evidence were also damaged or destroyed, but no criminal cases were jeopardized. The entire lower level of city hall and the police department had to be emptied, cleaned, and sanitized prior to personnel being allowed re-entry.

Through a thoughtful and thorough process of cataloging our damaged equipment and communications infrastructure, we quickly identified and prioritized those items that needed immediate replacement. With an innovative approach to repairs, the help of other departments, and a little luck, we reduced our repair costs by hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The good news is that all repairs and replacement were made with little to no cost to taxpayers thanks to insurance and drug forfeiture funds. We immediately procured gently-used replacement body armor for our officers from our good friends at the Royal Oak and Auburn Hills police departments. The use of drug forfeiture funds and grant money allowed us to quickly order new body armor for every officer.

We met with officials from Oakland County Information Technology and private repair personnel and quickly put together a plan to re-establish our communication capabilities. Our close partners at the Hazel Park Police Department dispatch answered our 911 calls for a few months as we located and installed a used 911 system. Our business phone system was patched back together and is being replaced, city-wide, in February. The damage to our shooting range and ar- mory has been mitigated and both are up and running, as are the locker rooms for our staff.

We would be remiss if we didn’t emphasize our gratitude to our law enforcement partners that helped us re-establish operations. We owe a huge thanks to Chief Doreen Olko of the Auburn Hills Police Department, Chief Martin Barner of the Hazel Park Police Department, and Chief Corrigan O’Donohue of the Royal Oak Police Department.

As we return to normal operations, we are proud to announce three promotions. Shane Ptak, a 19-year veteran, was promoted from Sergeant to Lieutenant. David Spellman and Timothy Andre’ were promoted to Sergeant. Sergeants Spellman and Andre’ have both served the citizens of Ferndale for nearly twenty years each. Congratulations to all on your promotions. The department is currently in the process of hiring several new officers to replace those that have recently retired.

So now we are The Ferndale Area District Library. What does being a District Library mean? What happens next?

Well, actually, not much will change at first. Our mission remains the same: to strengthen the Ferndale community by providing access to materials and services that inform, enrich, entertain, and empower.

Visiting the library? Checking out books? Attending our concerts? Taking little readers to our family story hours? Accessing public computers? Finding all the latest movies in our DVD section? Those things won’t change. We’re still the same wonderful library you’ve been using all these past years.

We’ll still offer the same services and all the same access. We’ll continue to provide inter-loaned materials from the 60+ libraries connected to us through The Library Network of Oakland County, including thousands of free ebooks and audio books for download, along with professional reference librarians and circulation specialists here to help you access these resources and assist you with your research, help on the computers, and provide cutting-edge programs for all ages. We’ll remain an anchor to the downtown and the living room of the community.

We will, however, be operating under Michigan’s District Library Law, a more modern library statute that allows us more autonomy and flexibility than we have had in the past. The dedicated library millage of 1.96 mills that was

approved by voters in 2007 will remain in place for now. The District Library Establishment Act allows for funding of up to four mills, but any changes in tax funding will require voter approval.

Who’s in this District? The Ferndale Area District Library involves a partnership between the Library, the City of Ferndale, and the Ferndale Public Schools. The schools will not be contributing to library finances, and the library will not be involved in the operation of the schools’ media centers. However, the possibility of more funding for the library in the future could lead to more outreach efforts and services to Ferndale Public School students and staff, helping to support school success.

As a District Library, we’ll be governed by a seven-member Library Board. A provisional library board was appointed by the Ferndale City Council at their December meeting. The provisional board is made up of the six trustees who were previously elected to the Ferndale Public Library Board, plus an additional library advocate, resident Kevin Yezbick. The provisional board will be in place until the 2016 election.

Upcoming Kids/Family programming: Family Storytime: February 9, 2015. 6:30 P.M. Giddy’on up to our Wild West- themed storytime! All ages welcome.

Kid’s Open Mic on Feb 11, 2015, 4:00 P.M. Kids 12 and under will have the opportunity to perform or display their special talent in front of a group of their peers in the library’s community room! No registration required. Microphones will be available, but if you need any other accommodations (instrument cords, etc), please contact Jordan at prior to the event.
