PARENTS, SUMMER IS HERE AND THAT means the kids will be home a lot more often, looking for something to do. How about reading a book? Lots of books? How about visiting the library (or maybe even a museum?)

FADL’s annual Summer Reading Program takes off on June 20 with a spectacular kickoff party at Garbutt Park. Kids and adults, teens and tweens, library patrons of ALL ages are encouraged to participate and read for prizes all summer long..

Summer Reading registrants can earn raffle tickets by visiting the library, reading books, or even visiting a state park or museum. Raffle prizes will be given away at our first-ever finale party on August 8, sponsored by The Friends of Ferndale Library.

Important Summer Reading Dates: On June 20, we celebrate our community heroes at our kickoff party, with a Rescue Vehicle Petting Zoo at Garbutt Park 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. On July 11, we will investigate Superhero Science with the Michigan Science Center. Then on July 18, we will empower our inner hero by practicing youth yoga with Belightful Yoga.

Also, each week in FADL’S Kids Corner, there’ll be a different guessing jar to win a prize! To view the full lineup for summer reading programs, stop by the library today or visit our Facebook page: facebook.com/ferndalekids

SUMMER CONCERT SERIES: Our Summer Concert Series kicked off on June 16 and will continue with two more performances in July and August. These free, all ages concerts are on July 14 and August 11, each starting at 6:30 P.M., hosted in the library’s Community Room.

The Library’s Summer Concert Series is an ideal way for music fans and families to spend a summer evening. Our roster of bands and musicians will be performing during regular Library hours, leading to tunes cheerfully resonating throughout the whole library at agreeable volume levels. Library cardholders donated all the desserts for our Fall Bake Sale last year, and now this is a way to for the Library to b give back.

On July 14 Ara Topouzian will treat Ferndale Library to a performance on the kanun (Middle Eastern harp). Topouzian’s traditional musical style keeps to his Armenian heritage, but has expanded to include music from around the Middle East, as well as jazz, fusion, new age and blues. Then on August 11, it’s a very special multimedia program celebrating d the music of The Beatles. Award winning writer, M.L. Liebler will read his short story “Beatles Forever” while nationally known Detroit area musicians perform Beatles favorites live.

ART: This summer, FADL invite any art lovers in the community who are interested in helping with planning, promotion, installation and reception-hosting to join the Arts & Exhibitions Committee. If interested, contact our director, Jessica Keyser at 248-547-6000. Coming up: fiber artist Boisali Biswas is scheduled to exhibit work from June 29 through August 8. A reception is scheduled for Thursday, July 9, 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.

SHARE YOUR LIBRARY STORY: Has the Looking Forward library made an impact in your life? Tell us about a time when a librarian or library program helped you! Did the library resources help you get an A on your paper? Or, did a librarian help you get a job? Stop at the Circulation Desk to B share your story.

THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS and people which make Ferndale a great community. Our vibrant downtown with such an enthusiastic DDA group is so lucky to have Cindy Wilcock on board. Our wonderfully progressive city council led by Mayor David Coulter keeps us on track, and forward- thinking Melanie Piana helps us look to the future.

Our unique businesses are always getting involved in city activities. Dean Bach has given so much. Who could leave out Monica Mills organizing the Pub Crawl, and Blues Fest, among so many other things. Francine Hachem and our newly reformed Art Commission are bringing free music events back into the city.

Mark Burton, who works so hard to bring us art in city hall and an art fair geared to Ferndale artists, is a great asset. Our library is always a hub of activity, from kid’s activities, to Friday evening music events, to special book readings. Mi- chael Lary, who works so hard to make our events memora- ble and to run smoothly.

Julia Music, who is the very icon of Pride. Steve from West- ern market is always willing to contribute. We all know these people when we see them. They are visible, and indeed why not? They work hard and deserve to be recognized.

However, there are other groups and people who contrib- ute to making Ferndale what it is. One of these groups is the Ferndale Historical Society. Garry Taylor leads this group. He is thoroughly immersed in his role. Recently, he presented a presentation for the Ferndale Senior Group. His topic was Ferndale during the war years. He brought artifacts to dem- onstrate his topic. Did you know that during WW II, our little town outsold the country in war bonds? We actually paid for two bomber planes by ourselves! Garry has an actual grenade which sat in a display case for over 30 years be- fore someone told him that it was live! Yikes! He gave a run- ning commentary of the objects as he placed them on the table for us to examine. All the seniors were fascinated.

He also brought two of the museum’s greatest assets. Jean Spang and Jan Frogatt. These ladies are completely devoted to the Historical Society. They do research on the various artifacts people donate, and answer questions peo- ple have on their houses. They delve into old newspaper articles, go online to the county, and research old school records, along with whatever other avenues they can find. Along with Roger Schmidt, they are putting together another book on Ferndale. Roger, Jean, and Jan can tell you where members of the Purple Gang lived, which houses were blind pigs, as well political scandals. Roger is like a bulldog with a bone whenever he happens upon an old picture which is not identified. Our history helps show our personality “back then” and how it has evolved to what it is now. From them, we get a sense of continuity.

We can support them by becoming members of the Historical Society. It only costs $10 per year, or $100 for a life- time membership. As a member, you will get the crow’s nest sent to you quarterly. This a newsletter with stories about various historical events and places in Ferndale.

Stay tuned this summer for a return of the Music in the Park Series, with the following dates: June 26, July 17, July 24, and August 21. Time is from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. and cost is free. Bring your own chairs or blankets, and your wine. We will be grilling hot dogs and selling snacks.

Also, The Art Commission is holding a Ferndale artist only art fair on June 20. Cost is only $75 for a space. We still have room. Ask Mark Burton, Michael Lary, or myself for details.

Our meetings are the second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 11:00 A.M. at the Kulick Center.

Now, go enjoy the summer!

FERNDALE FRIENDS IS SAD TO ANNOUNCE that Robert Taylor, long-time owner of Ferndale City Glass Company, passed away on April 16, 2015 at the age of 84.

He was born on July 2, 1930 in Detroit, Michigan to John and Elsie. He served his country during the Korean War, and soon after he returned home, he joined the staff of Ferndale City Glass, a company his uncle founded in 1934. He originally entered the business to assist his uncle at the request of his father, but what was planned to be a few months of helping out turned into a lifetime of work, and a Ferndale institution. Bob took over the business with a partner in the late 1960s and became sole owner in 1975.

One of his long time friends and customers says, “I’ve been a customer of Ferndale Glass for about 20 years and really enjoyed Bob’s stories and sense of humor. But Bob was more than that; you could tell that he cared about people and their stories. Businesses like Ferndale Glass, and people like Bob are what make communities great… a steady, committed presence that truly affects quality of life.”

Another customer relates: “My first experience with Ferndale City Glass was in the late ‘80s. I walked in the front door and there was no one in the store. A parrot said ‘May I help you?’ I looked around and couldn’t see anyone. Again – ‘May I help you?’ The third time, I figured what the heck. ‘I’m looking for butyl tape for a windshield mount and some molding clips…’ A guy came out of the back room laughing and holding his stomach. ‘I wondered how long before you would answer the bird.’ That was my very memorable introduction to Bob.”

While the business was his first passion, Bob also enjoyed weekends at his cottage in Hartland, Michigan. He enjoyed boating, jetskiing, snowmobiling, and riding motorcycles. He was also a member of the American Legion and enjoyed bowling on a team with members of his post.

Bob is survived by his wife Melva and his three children; Matthew, Michael, and Marla; four grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends. Another son, Mark, preceded him in death in 2002. He was laid to rest at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, Michigan, with military honors.

Ferndale City Glass Company continues to operate under ownership of the next generation of the Taylor family. It’s located at 140 Vester Street, just east of Woodward. All of us at Ferndale Friends extend our condolences to Bob’s family.

I CAUGHT UP WITH RABBI ALANA ALPERT AT HER COMFORTABLE, book-filled home in Detroit. She led me upstairs, apologizing for the messy house (for the record, it wasn’t!) and explained that she was still changing her kitchen for Passover, the first time she’d done it on her own. “I keep calling my father to ask him if I’m doing it right.”

A California native, Rabbi Alpert got her BA in Community Studies at UC Santa Cruz. She worked and studied in New York and Israel, and in 2014 received her ordination from the Hebrew College in Boston. Her partner Justin is a Mississippi native who got his PhD at the University of Memphis. So why did they decide to settle in Detroit?

Well, Detroit offered something she never thought she’d have – a congregation. Most of her work has been as a community organizer and Congregation T’chiyah was looking for a hybrid; part-time rabbi, part-time community organizer. Rabbi Alpert also has a little Motown history of her own.

“My Grandma Shirley grew up in Detroit.” She smiles. “Detroiters are very welcoming if you’re not from Detroit, but if you have roots here, it helps connect you.” Detroit turned out to be what she and Justin were looking for. “Justin wanted a place with grit, and I needed a Jewish community that wants to do more than just talk about social justice. Detroit has both.”

They arrived this summer. Their original housing fell through. Their first weeks were spent with others until they found a place to live, which worked out just fine. It gave them a chance to explore the area, rather than immediately setting up a home. A colleague, Rabbi Silverman, heard about their present home “at her yoga class, which is taught by my guitar teacher.” I smiled at the image of young rabbis at yoga class, playing guitar, and asked

about the challenges of bringing young people into a congregation. “The young people show up. But becoming a member is not part of their mindset. We’re reevaluating.”

She spoke of her installment as Rabbi, which is set to begin in mid-April. Usually it happens sooner (Rabbi Alpert will have been with the synagogue for nine months,) but she’s glad, because it will feel more “personal” now. Last fall, funding fell through and she started considering other offers. “Justin’s work has been unstable as well, but we really couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. This place is so complicated, so alive in history. It’s intense, but we really want to make it work.” Justin encouraged her to fight to stay in Detroit. Now, fundraising has become a big part of her life. “It’s hard,” She admits. Again, that smile. “I’ve been hustling. I’m a Detroiter now.” A Detroiter with “a wonderful congregation” and a community she loves.

Alpert is adapting a model she learned while living in NYC. “So often, people just need to be invited into movements for racial and economic justice. At Detroit Jews for Justice, we tap into the relationships in the Jewish community, drawing on our faith, tradition, and culture, to stand in solidarity with those on the front lines of struggles for social change.”

“As community organizers, we invest in a process, rather than take on specific issues. We figure out what a community is working on so we can support them.” Detroit is changing, but for whose benefit?

Alpert: “We want to work to make sure those changes benefit the community. Detroit doesn’t “need” us. People have been working and fighting for Detroit’s survival all along, but we can be useful. We can help continue that work.”

It was a nippy night in late March when I marched into the Bizarre Bazaar. Not the opening line of a short story or a movie pitch, but a fun evening for a deadly serious cause.

The Michigan AIDS Coalition held its second annual Bizarre Bazaar at the Twist Night Club on March 26, a silent auction of goodies donated by individ- uals, stores, and organizations to raise money to continue their important mission. Artwork, framed posters, jewelry, home accents, furniture, and other items were on display. One end of the room was taken up by a selection of clothing and cards from Just4Us, our own dearly departed Kevin Rogers, still helping a good cause from the other side.

I spoke first with Terry Ryan, CEO of the Michigan AIDS Coalition. He quickly gave me the title of this piece, and told me it was the most important thing to remember.

“AIDS is not over! You don’t see AIDS covered much on the news anymore.” AIDS began as a terrifying and unknown killer. Once its transmission and risk factors were understood, and the fear began to be replaced with practical suggestions, there was a tremendous drop in new AIDS cases. Combine that with advances in anti-retrovi- ral drugs, and today AIDS is now seen as merely another chronic, manageable disease.

Screen Shot 2015-04-21 at 5.42.16 PM

Almost. “Younger people need to know the risks.” Terry says. He fears an upswing in new cases due to lack of education. The same rules still apply; always wear protection when having sex. Don’t share needles.

MAC serves the most vulnerable populations, high-risk populations in poorer areas who generally lack good health care coverage. MAC sends trained outreach teams into bars and, with assistance of the management, provides a safe, anonymous area where people can be voluntarily tested. The staff circulate, chatting casually and letting people know they can be tested. The reaction is generally positive, Terry says, and the testing is simple. A quick finger prick is all that’s needed to test for AIDS. This year, MAC has expanded their testing to include other STDs like gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia as well.

I next spoke with our mayor, Dave Coulter. Mayor Coulter was affiliated with the Michigan AIDS Fund, which in 2009 merged with the Midwest AIDS Pre- vention Project to form the current Michigan AIDS Coalition.

“I have a passion for HIV prevention.” the Mayor explained. He echoed Terry Ryan’s sentiments, saying “There are a lot of young people now who don’t know anyone who’s died of AIDS. We have to keep awareness alive, at a time when people think the crisis is over.”

At the beginning of his famous comedy piece, Sataland Diaries, David Sedaris recalls how he first came to New York, expecting to step right off the bus and into a gig writing for soap operas. He didn’t, of course, and ended up working as an elf in Macy’s Christmas display.

It turns out Sedaris was doing it work. Jill Lorie Hurst, a Ferndale resident for the past year (and writer for Ferndale Friends) did have a gig writing soap operas, achieving the rank of co-head writer for Guiding Light. But she didn’t just step off a bus and into soap stardom…she did it the hard way.

“I grew up watching them.” Jill recalls. “My mother was a fan, and girls tend to follow their mothers.”

Originally from the east side of Detroit, she studied theater at Wayne State, then moved to New York City. Once there, she worked as a waitress for ten years, living day-to-day. Jill describes a carefree life of walking to work, then afterwards walking over to see plays on Broadway.

One day, one of her regular customers asked if she wanted to have a tour of the studio where her husband worked, filming commercials. Jill was nonplussed until her customer mentioned that the studio was also where they filmed Guiding Light.

“My eyes lit up then!” Jill says. On her tour, she met some actors and came away with a great impression. Later, she accepted a part-time receptionist job at the studio. “I was still waitressing, breakfast and lunch, then answering phones at the studio in the late afternoon.” Eventually, there was an opening for writer’s assistant. She did that for five years. Then, things started to snowball.

“It was a series of very supportive people, gently pushing me to the next step.” She recalls. She started writing scripts with a partner. From there, she became a script editor, then a breakdown writer. She learned on the job, bootstrapping from one task to the next. She spent a year as a producer. At last, one day she found herself as co-head writer of Guiding Light.

“Nothing magical.” Jill says. “I just showed up. I loved being there.”

Unfortunately, she couldn’t spend too long at the pinnacle. Guiding Light was canceled in 2009 after a 57-year run on television. Her co-creators hit the ground writing, working for other soaps, but Jill was exhausted. “We’d been working seven days a week, for forever.” Jill wanted a break. She jumped into other projects, gathering old colleagues and actors from the show to work on pitching new properties, and…

“We failed miserably.” She laughs. Jill found other work, including a gig working for Ricky Lauren, wife of Ralph, for three years. But all things change, and real life sometimes intrudes. Four years after Guiding Light ended, she and her husband (who she’d met at the studio) had hit the wall financially. “We left NYC because we were broke and I wasn’t quite sure what the next step should be.” Jill says.

So how did they decide on Ferndale? “We didn’t! It found us. When my mom’s best friends offered us one of their Ferndale rentals that had just been vacated, we grabbed it.”

Asked what aspected of Ferndale attract her the most, Jill says, “First of all, it’s walkable. I don’t drive, and it has such direct access to Detroit. We have old friends who live right down the street on Woodward. We love the restaurants, the fact that there are two bookstores, the piped-in music downtown, the front porches, the wind chimes, and the terrific people we’ve met, most of whom seem proud and happy to live here. I love that!”

How does she feel about Ferndale’s future with so much happening inside the city? “I hope it continues to be a town that values small business and diversity. I hope it holds onto its community of artists and tradespeople. Ferndale reminds me of working on Guiding Light; it’s character driven, collaborative, and all about community.”

Welcome home, Jill. We hope you stay with us for a long time!

A joyful and committed teacher can change the lives of his or her students for the better. When I met Jan Whinham in her Ferndale High School classroom on a snowy Monday morning, I recognized a teacher with the same sense of commitment to her students.

She was hired in 1986, part time, to teach dance and special education. She earned her undergraduate degree at Western Michigan University and a Master’s in Learning Disabilities at Eastern. “I wanted to be a dance therapist”. Paus- es, considers, smiles. “I am one.” She was quick to give genuine praise to the school system – “Ferndale does really well in the fine arts.”

Her work is anything but part time now. She teaches high school, middle school, elementa- ry, and works with CASA (Center for Advanced Studies of the Arts). Classes include ballet, jazz, con- temporary, and some ballroom styles, including salsa and swing. The students also learn to choreograph, and shows sometimes include audience participation.

Jan, like many modern teachers, takes work home with her. She’s learned to choreograph new work at the kitchen table. She uses a little CD player and keeps the volume down so that her family doesn’t get sick of hearing the same song repeated. She is collaborative, looking to CASA alumni for help with choreography to make sure there is enough variety in the numbers performed.

When a show calls for tap, they tap. Preparing for 2013’s production of “Thoroughly Modern Millie” required five-hour rehearsals every Sunday. Jan talked about digging up a ton of old tap shoes to try and fit everyone; budgets, after all, are limited. Pat at Lynch’s House of Sequins made the shoes performance worthy.

Given the number of shows she oversees every year – three for the middle school class- es, two for high school and two (plus a showcase) for CASA, it’s a good thing she’s a saver. There are bins and boxes in a corner of the classroom filled with costumes from shows past. Jan pulls from the “archives” to get most of what she needs for each show – she al- ters, adjusts, and fixes so that each student will have the appropriate costume for the current production. “Luckily, I have a wash machine here”. And an assistant, I ask? Her eyes twinkle. “No. I wash the costumes.”

Jan believes dance helps students dig deeper, and be well rounded. Memorizing patterns might help with alge- bra. They choreograph dances to poems — no music, just the connection between the movement and the words. Dance can also help with social skills. “Kids have to get along in dance class. They can’t block each other out.” There’s a sense of something “beyond myself, for the good of the group.”

Just then, the group starts to file in. Jan shifts focus to the people who matter most, her students. They are safe in this class, safe to make mistakes, fall on their faces, create something wonderful. I envy them their time with Jan Whinham.

“Good morning.” says Jan to the kids. “It’s going to be a good day.”

A QUESTION I AM ASKED most often is, “What do you seniors do?” Aside from our trips, and occasional special meetings, most people have no idea of who we are, and what we really do. You all think of us as a group of old people who appear to be slightly out of touch with the real world. You see us out at restaurants, or at an event, and you chat politely, as you would do with your grandmother or favorite aunt, and that is it. We are a group to you, not individuals. In some portion of your mind, we play bingo, compare illnesses, and sell cook- ies. Yeah, right!

We may get on our short bus as a group, but look closer, and really see us as we tour Ikea. See how Valerie and Betsy tour the store, chatting, looking at everything, and buying little, just happy to be out with friends. Jean Russell is seri- ous, she came with a mental list, and is sticking to it.

We attend every special exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Joyce Littlejohn and I can be counted on to take the longest, reading each explanation, and carefully gazing at all the images. Nancy Johns can be counted to hit the gift store first, never leaving empty-handed. Then, we all do lunch in the cafeteria.

Most summers we do the Riverwalk, strolling by the water and chatting. Even our bus driver, Greg, gets in on this, lead- ing the pack. Virginia and Joyce and I are second, with Sheila and Peggy not far behind. A few of the others sit on the benches and enjoy the sunshine.

Our meetings are either informative or entertaining. We have speakers like Garry Taylor from the Ferndale Historic Muse- um, who is coming on Wednesday, April 22 to talk about an interesting aspect of Ferndale’s history. At other times, we are just silly and have fun. On Wednesday, April 8, we will have an Easter egg hunt! I know, it’s after Easter, but, who cares? We are going to hide plastic eggs containing gift certificates, lottery tickets, and candy, and then let the members search. I love watching the ladies spread out and hunt. Even the quiet ones like Joyce Williams and Eva join in and find a prize.

In June, we will go to the Frida Kahlo exhibit at the DIA.

To further enhance this experience, we are hosting a docent from the DIA at the May 27 meeting to show slides and speak about Frida and Diego Rivera and their year in Detroit.

Virginia has a particular love of dive bar hamburgers, and she has arranged a tour of Ferndale’s shot and a beer bars, complete with burgers.

In the summer, one of our meetings is a pot luck barbeque, with everyone bringing a dish. I always bring my butter- milk pie, Joyce brings her spaghetti salad, Katie swoops in with her famous baked beans. At Thanksgiving time, we do another pot luck, with the turkey catered, and we bring all the fixings, potatoes, salads, and desserts.

Joyce Bannon helps knitters and crochet people on Tuesdays, as well as helping in the kitchen. She brings us food when we are sick, and is a perfect moth- er hen.

So, I hope I have helped you see us in a somewhat different light, and I hope you will join us for future trips and events. You don’t have to be a senior to drop in for our meetings, and go on some of our trips. That said, you only have to be 55 years old to join us, and I am sure a lot of you are at least that old.

Our meetings are the second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 11:00 A.M. at the Kulick Center.

Now go enjoy spring!
