Good habits learned early can lead to a lifetime of benefits. That’s the hope of every teacher and parent. In the Ferndale school district, one of the hoped-for benefits is a better, greener world

Five Ferndale schools were certified as “Green Schools” in a program managed by Oakland County. Signed into law in 2006 by former governor Granholm, the program gives interested schools a list of 20 environmental and energy-saving targets, fulfilling ten of which earns the school a “Green” designation, certificate, and flag. Fifteen targets fulfilled gets the school “Emerald” status. Twenty confers the coveted “Evergreen” designation. Currently, Coolidge Intermediate School, Ferndale Middle School, and Roosevelt Primary have achieved Green status, and Ferndale High School has made it to Emerald level.

John F. Kennedy Elementary School, however, has gone all the way and is currently the only Evergreen school in the district. Now in its seventh year of participation in the program, kindergarten teacher D’Anne McNeil and parent volunteer Susan Christin were the prime movers.

“I live in Royal Oak, and my kids had the ‘Oakroots’ movement in their school for Green School certification.” McNeil tells me, as I sit in a kindergartner-size chair in her classroom. The little whirlwinds have just left for the day, and the room still has all the evidence of their bustling activity. “I thought, wow, I want to do this for my school, too.” She hooked up with Christin, who’d had the same thought, and worked to turn Kennedy green.

It starts with educating the students on recycling. Students in Ferndale have a good head start, because many recycle already at home. In the classroom, McNeil says, “Anything paper, plastic or glass” goes into bins. In the main hallway, next to the office, is a large station where students can bring in electronics, batteries, and cords. A large container holds old prescription medication bottles, which are cleaned and sent to FernCare Clinic for re-use. The recycled electronics are purchased by a company that sends a bit of money back to the school, to be used to help run the program.

Another component of being a Green school is reducing waste. Kindergartners receive a “waste- free” lunch kit, including a water bottle, snack bag, and reusable napkin. Still, a lot of garbage is generated in the lunchroom, which is where parent volunteer Jennifer Krycian steps in, spending about a half-hour each day sifting recyclables from the lunchroom waste, doing things like rinsing yogurt cups and styrofoam trays. It’s a job that requires “rubber gloves and a strong stomach,” according to Krycian, but she believes in the program and the results.

“It sets a good example for the kids.” She says. It also has financial rewards for the school; a company that takes and recycles applesauce containers returned $190 to the school last year, for example. Other companies handle hard-to- recycle items like foil drink pouches. Krycian hopes that soon the styrofoam trays can be phased out in favor of biodegradable ones. She’d also like to get a few more volunteers to help start a comprehensive composting program. Still, the efforts are making a difference. The janitor, Krycian says, has noted that there’s a lot less garbage being produced in the lunchroom than before.

A third component of Green school certification is energy efficiency. McNeil talks about the solar cooker they acquired to make applesauce. The school has also installed programmable thermostats to cut heating and cooling bills.

Then there are the ecological initiatives. 6th grade teacher Greg Williamson raises salmon in his classroom for the DNR, releasing them into the wild. There are guidelines for adopting endangered animals.

The most visible initiative at Kennedy, however, is the gardens, supervised by Stacy Budzik and Jennifer Vermeersch-Bacon. McNeil shows me photos of the raised planters. “We grow kale, lettuce, beans, herbs.” She says. Some are sold to raise money, others are harvested and served at the school’s fall festival. Rain barrels have been installed on four corners of the school. There’s also a native plant garden, run by

Gretchen Abrams. The school’s latchkey program has students caring for the gardens, weeding, digging, planting, and refilling the bird feeders. Kennedy Elementary’s grounds are a certified wildlife habitat and a waystation for monarch butterfllies, as well.

Susan Christin, who gathers information and statistics and compiles and sends the needed reports and documentation to Oakland Schools for Green certification, acknowledges the positive effects of the program. “My kids and others now have a huge awareness of what’s recyclable. They also take the initiative to recycle on their own.” She says.

It’s a lot of work, and a lot of progress! D’Anne McNeil just smiles at my amazement, though. “The hard part was getting started. From there, we just added a little bit every year.”

Everyone doing a little bit can add up to a whole lot, including a greener, healthier world. Here’s to the teachers, parents, students, and

administrators of Ferndale schools, working hard to keep it green!

The controversial 3-60 Proposal is dead for now. At the City Council Meeting on March 9, Council members decided not to extend exclusive talks with developer Jake Sigal, effectively nixing the plan.

The 3-60 Proposal would have seen the construction of multi- story developments on Withington and West Troy, including parking garages, residential units, and office space. Proponents saw the project as a way to alleviate parking concerns and breathe new life and investment into downtown Ferndale. Opponents, including many existing businesses on 9 Mile, feared negative impacts like snarled traffic, enormous cost, skyrocketing rents, and a massive facade out of character with Ferndale’s image.

Mayor Dave Coulter spoke with Ferndale Friends about the decision. “The 3-60 proposal addressed many of the goals the city had identified for years, including more parking but also increasing the amount of people that live and work downtown to better support retail. But Council was also determined that any development of this nature needed public input, and it had to fit the unique character of our city. The goals are still relevant to the future success of downtown, so we’ll take what we’ve heard and learned as we work with businesses, the DDA, residents and others on how to solve these issues.”

Council members had similar sentiments, and it was noted that parking problems around downtown remain unaddressed. As of press time, there’s no word on any new proposals.

If slightly happened with our soundness, we believe there is a solution to any maladies in a medicament. What medicines do patients purchase online? Saturday, June 13

It all started in 1985 on an athletic track in Tacoma, Washington. Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran around the track for 24 hours, raising $27,000 for the American Cancer society. A year later, supporters joined him and the event began to grow. Today, Relay for Life events are held in hundreds of cities around the world. Throughout its history, Relay for Life has raised awareness of cancer, given people a way to connect with fellow patients, survivors, caregivers, and supporters, and raised $5 billion for cancer research. Today, organized by the American Cancer Society, companies and individuals form teams and raise money, the goal being to have someone from their team running or walking the track for the duration of the event.

I spoke to Michele Sibula and Christina Linn of the ACS about this year’s event. The first thing to know is that this year’s relay is at a new location, Martin Road Park, located at 1615 East Lewiston Avenue. “More public access, new neighborhoods.” Christina smiles. Event leadership teams can customize Relays to fit a particular city, and Ferndale’s promises to be fun and unique.

Ferndale’s Relay will run for 14 hours, from 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 13 until the stroke of midnight to welcome in Sunday, June 14. Registration opens at 10:00 A.M. Opening ceremonies begin at 11:00 A.M. with a survivor speaker, music from the choir and the presentation of the colors. As the race begins, the first lap goes to the survivors, celebrating another year of having beaten cancer, while those who have been by their side cheer them on along the sidelines. Then the caregivers take their turn, then the teams take the track. But there’s much more to do than just walking or running around. There will also be a “kids zone,” with activities for the whole family, including bounce houses, games, and entertainment.

In the afternoon, there will be a “fight back” ceremony, inspiring people to take action and make a commitment to fight cancer for themselves, for their loved ones, and for the community. You can make a pledge, for example, to eat healthier, or make a donation, or to remind family members to get screened. There will be speakers with inspirational stories of survival as well.

You can also learn more about ACS CAN, the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network, the lobbying and legislative arm of the ACS. ACS CAN has scored numerous victories for public health, including banning smoking in public facilities.
There will be a silent auction as well, with proceeds supporting the ACS and its work. Individuals or companies interested in donating items for the auction may contact Christina at the email address below.

As dusk comes on, the always-moving Luminaria Ceremony begins. In it, we take the time to remember the people who have fought well but lost their battle to cancer, those who have battled cancer in the past, and to support those who are still fighting it. Candles are lit and set in each individual personal bag that has a special message, a picture, or a person’s name. A bagpiper will lead the lap around the track. Luminaries may be purchased on the spot for a $10 donation.

Cancer does not discriminate. It has no mercy. Relay for Life is one of the ways to even the score, to do something positive to fight this dreadful disease, and bring on the day when cancer is beaten for all. Victors, not victims!

For more info on how to donate or participate, please contact Christina Linn at (248) 663-3454 or e-mail christina.linn@cancer.org

THE 9 MILE RESURFACING PROJECT is anticipated to commence in early April and be completed by mid-August. The DPW will continue to provide updates as we go through the construction process.

Livernois and Marshall Traffic Signal Update: Construction of the new traffic signal is complete, and the signal began operating on Friday, January 30. Typically, this type of project would have taken six to nine months to complete. However, due to the emergency nature of this project and the hard work of all parties involved, this project was completed in 90 days. The DPW is continuing to work with the at-fault driver’s auto insurance company regarding reimbursement of all costs incurred by the City.

Hilton Road (8 Mile to 9 Mile) Resurfacing Update: The majority of construction will take place in the Spring of 2016. Some work will be done in the Fall of 2015

It’s six months later and we are just nearing 100 percent after the GreatFlood of 2014. Like many residents and businesses in Ferndale, the Police Department and City Hall were severely impacted by the unprecedented flooding this past August.

During the worst of the flooding, Lt. O’Loughlin of the Ferndale Police Department said that water was, “shooting four feet into the air from every plumbing fixture in the basement”. Nasty sewer water rose to approximately three and one-half feet in the basement, severely impacting operations and equipment.

The flood water entered the department’s IT room, fatally damaging our 911 system, regular telephone system, and radio system, as well as many other computer and IT components. Initial estimates to repair or replace the damaged equipment quickly rose to north of one-half million dollars.

Flood waters also invaded the men’s and women’s locker rooms, shooting range, weight room, evidence room, and department armory. The majority of our officers lost uniforms, leather gear, cold weather gear, and significant amounts of personal property.

Most of the department’s weapons were submerged for several hours and each pistol and rifle had to be meticulously cleaned, lubricated, and function checked before going back on the street. Several thousand rounds of ammunition were submerged and rendered unreliable for use on duty.

All of the equipment in our gym had to be rehabbed or replaced. Numerous piec- es of evidence were also damaged or destroyed, but no criminal cases were jeopardized. The entire lower level of city hall and the police department had to be emptied, cleaned, and sanitized prior to personnel being allowed re-entry.

Through a thoughtful and thorough process of cataloging our damaged equipment and communications infrastructure, we quickly identified and prioritized those items that needed immediate replacement. With an innovative approach to repairs, the help of other departments, and a little luck, we reduced our repair costs by hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The good news is that all repairs and replacement were made with little to no cost to taxpayers thanks to insurance and drug forfeiture funds. We immediately procured gently-used replacement body armor for our officers from our good friends at the Royal Oak and Auburn Hills police departments. The use of drug forfeiture funds and grant money allowed us to quickly order new body armor for every officer.

We met with officials from Oakland County Information Technology and private repair personnel and quickly put together a plan to re-establish our communication capabilities. Our close partners at the Hazel Park Police Department dispatch answered our 911 calls for a few months as we located and installed a used 911 system. Our business phone system was patched back together and is being replaced, city-wide, in February. The damage to our shooting range and ar- mory has been mitigated and both are up and running, as are the locker rooms for our staff.

We would be remiss if we didn’t emphasize our gratitude to our law enforcement partners that helped us re-establish operations. We owe a huge thanks to Chief Doreen Olko of the Auburn Hills Police Department, Chief Martin Barner of the Hazel Park Police Department, and Chief Corrigan O’Donohue of the Royal Oak Police Department.

As we return to normal operations, we are proud to announce three promotions. Shane Ptak, a 19-year veteran, was promoted from Sergeant to Lieutenant. David Spellman and Timothy Andre’ were promoted to Sergeant. Sergeants Spellman and Andre’ have both served the citizens of Ferndale for nearly twenty years each. Congratulations to all on your promotions. The department is currently in the process of hiring several new officers to replace those that have recently retired.

Story by Jason Shubnell

Marijuana has become one of the hottest topics in America the last few years. Newspaper and URL headlines are filled with drug-related puns, but the growing legality of marijuana is very real.

“I do think that public perception of marijuana, as well as criminal laws, are out of tune with the reality of things,” said attorney Matthew Abdo, a Ferndale resident. Abdo is a criminal defense attorney with more than 2,000 court appearances in the last five years. Drug crimes, marijuana in particular, are a large part of his practice. Along with colleague Matthew LaGrasso, they specialize in defending clients in medical marijuana cases.

Voters in Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Washington D.C. have already passed measures allowing the legalization of recreational marijuana. Twenty-three additional states now allow for medicinal marijuana.

MSU’s States News recently reported on the latest marijuana polls, which show a “growing number of residents agree that, in Michigan, marijuana should be taxed and regulated the same way as alcohol.”

A recent SurveyUSA poll (sponsored by the Michigan Medical Marijuana Report) of 500 state residents showed that 64 percent of Michigan citizens would vote “yes” on a ballot proposal that would tax and regulate the drug to increase school and road funding.

Marijuana is currently decriminalized by the city of Ferndale if you’re over 21 and have a limited amount (one ounce or less) for personal use in your home. This is very similar to the statewide law In Colorado.

Ann Arbor, Flint, Grand Rapids, Ypsilanti, Jackson and Kalamazoo have passed laws to decriminalize small amounts or reduce the penalties for marijuana possession. Late last year, Berkley, Huntington Woods, Mount Pleasant, Port Huron and Saginaw also joined the list.

Screen Shot 2015-02-17 at 7.45.45 AM

When asked if marijuana should be legalized, Abdo says that he be- lieves that Michigan residents just simply aren’t ready for the legaliza- tion of medical and recreational marijuana.

“Though medical marijuana was passed by the voters by a majority, it is still not very popular with government institutions. The trend seems to be accept- ing the medical piece before outright legalization,” he said. “Unfortunately, the Michigan Marijuana Act has turned a lot of growers into felons because they’ve just slightly failed to follow the law. I do not believe that was the law’s intention, nor do I think that is the best use of taxpayer dollars to prosecute.”

Back in December, legislation that would have allowed for the legal return and regulation of medical marijuana dispensaries in Michigan fizzled. As reported by Mlive, “House Bill 4271, approved a year ago by the lower chamber, wrapped up the 2013-14 session… without acting on the measure.”

“It’s hard to admit when you’re wrong,” Alan Brochstein, one of the leading marijuana stock analysts in the country, told me last year. “(The U.S. government) has to have a graceful exit (from the war on drugs.) Just think about how long it took to get out of Vietnam.” Brochstein has an educational product, 420 Investor, on Marketfy.com which teaches people about investing in marijuana-related stocks.

The state of Colorado recently wrapped up its first full year of marijuana legalization. The state is on track to collect almost $50 million in taxes and fees for 2014 on sales of at least $500 million.

Speaking about Michigan, Abdo said, “In a state strapped for money, I think putting thought into making it part of a solid licensing system, revenue, and tax stream is something worth putting thought into.”

Nanci Frazier, director of Motor City Ferrets, will be the first to tell you that ferrets are not easy pets. But don’t let this fool you; she believes they are worth every moment of trouble. And she speaks from experience; since opening Motor City Ferrets, Nanci and co-director Alex Oeming have personally saved over 1,000 ferrets.

Motor City Ferrets is a registered non-profit shelter and rescue service in Hazel Park, run out of Nanci and Alex’s home. Currently, the shelter has thirty critters available for adoption, and can have anywhere between 20-50 ferrets at a time. The ferrets all receive personal attention and play time. Most of the basement of the house has been transformed into a safe, warm, clean play area for the ferrets (and ferret owners.) Safe, spacious cages line one wall. The floor is easy-to-clean linoleum, scattered with tubes (ferrets love to crawl through tubes) and other toys; tubs and open cages lined with blankets and ferret hammocks provide places to rest.

Although MCF comes first in Nanci and Alex’s lives, both work outside of the home to help fund the rescue. Nanci has worked many jobs, including organizer and office worker. Alex is a science teacher. The shelter is a non-profit and can be quite costly to operate, so donations (monetary and supplies) are always welcomed and appreciated.

Because it is a private residence, the shelter does not have regular business hours. Instead, they offer private adoption events and personal appointments for interested adopters. Keeping the shelter’s address private helps prevent people from dropping off unwanted ferrets in dangerous conditions; for example, 3:00 A.M. on a frigid night. While Nanci and Alex are happy to take in surrenders, they don’t want to risk animals getting sick or hurt while unattended on their porch.

Nanci wants everyone to know that ferrets are domesticated animals and thus, “they have no clue how to survive in the wild.” They’ve lost the instinct to hunt and cannot fend for themselves; the average ferret released into the wild won’t last a week. If you see a ferret loose outside, please contact Motor City Ferrets immediately. Ferrets also lack the ability to find their way home. If they get out, it’s unlikely they’ll come back. Due to their flexible bodies, ferrets can squeeze through tiny openings; Nanci says that dryer vents are a common means of escape.

On the other hand, ferrets are fun, gentle, social animals, and it’s a real blast to watch them play. Most well-socialized ferrets love to cuddle and play. Just be careful of loose objects; if a ferret likes it, they’ll likely steal it and drag it off somewhere to hide. While ferrets may sleep up to 20 hours a day, they’re very active while awake, and taking them out of their cages to roam and play (in a safe, ferret-proofed area) is a must. Nanci often describes ferrets to a would-be parents as a cross between kittens and human toddlers. In other words, ferrets are positively adorable and a true delight to be around, but they can also be a great big handful!

Motor City Ferrets offers a lot for ferret fans. In addition to adoptions, MCF offers temporary boarding and many ferret supplies for sale. Miss Sophie’s Weezily Wares, the ferret specialty shop operated by MCF, sells a variety of cages and accessories. Handmade blankets, beds, cleaners and ferret-themed gifts are all available. 100% of proceeds go towards vet bills and other operating costs of the rescue. Regardless of where you got your ferret, visit the shop for inexpensive but high quality supplies.

When you adopt from a specialized shelter, you gain access to experts on your new pet. Nanci has owned ferrets for nearly two decades. Within that time, she has seen most of the health and behavioral problem that ferrets can have and has met specialized veterinarians in the area. Nanci and Alex like to keep in touch with adopters to make sure the ferrets are healthy and the owners are happy. The Motor City Ferret Facebook group has over 1,000 members posting pictures, questions and stories daily. From health concerns to silly home videos, the group is supportive of ferret fans everywhere.

Interested in becoming a ferret owner? Nanci strongly suggests reading “Ferrets for Dummies” first or perusing the Facebook page to see what a ferret family experiences. On November 4, voters in Michigan’s 27th House District elected Democrat Robert Wittenberg to replace outgoing Representative Ellen Cogen Lipton. Wittenberg has lived in the district all his life; he was born in Huntington Woods, attended high school in Berkley, and currently resides in Oak Park. Now, he gets the opportunity to represent us all in Lansing. I sat down with Representative-Elect Wittenberg recently to talk about the tasks he faces as he prepares to head off to the Michigan State Capitol in January.

Ferndale Friends: Being a politician has to be a real strain on self, friends, and family. Why did you run for office?

Robert Wittenberg: I ran because I grew up in this community, I love this community, and I really want to serve this community. I’m frustrated with the way things are in Lansing, and I want to make a change. There are issues of fairness and equality for the LGBT community we have to address. There are issues with education, which isn’t a priority in Lansing any more. Teachers in public schools are having their resources cut, their benefits cut, and their class sizes increased. We need to reverse this trend.

FF: How would you describe your position in the political spectrum? Progressive, moderate, conservative?

RW: Definitely progressive, which is good because this district is progressive. My values align with the people of this district, and I hope to bring some progressive ideas to Lansing.

FF: As a member of the minority party in a deeply divided political landscape, how do you plan on getting things done in Lansing?

RW: There are definitely members of the far right that believe that government

has no role in anyone’s life, but there are a lot of people, both Republican and Democrat, who are closer to the middle and really do want to get things done, and you have to be able to work with them. There are, however, issues where we (the Democrats) won’t compromise. I’ll never sell out my progressive values. But overall, if there’s something we can figure out that will benefit the state, then we have to have that discussion. Many times, it’s about the relationships you build. When I had my orientation for incoming House members, there were 40 new representatives (out of 110 total seats) from both parties. I talked to the new Republicans, sat next to them, in the interest of building those relationships that will let us get some things done.

FF: What are some of the unique problems of the 27th District that you hope to address?

RW: Our municipalities are starved for funds. I sat down with the city managers in just about every city in the district, and all of them said that they don’t have the money to pay for essential services, that they’ve had to cut back on almost everything. This is true all over the state, but it especially affects some of our communities here in the district. This also affects our schools. We have great schools in our district, but can they continue to be great without proper funding? Every time I’ve gone to a school board meeting, they talk about their funding being cut and cut and cut. They’re like magicians, figuring out how to do more with less. While it’s a good thing to be able to do that, I don’t think they should have to. I think they should be able to do more with more.

Another thing I’ve been fighting for is equality, and the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act. The Republicans aren’t allowing a fully-inclusive bill; they want to leave out transgender rights. They’re getting a lot of push-back from Democrats, and our caucus is united on the idea that unless a bill is fully-inclusive, we won’t support it. Because we have people from all walks of life in our district, this is something that will affect us directly.

FF: What’s highest on the agenda once you get to Lansing?

RW: As a caucus, there are things we want to pursue. Besides equal rights with the Elliott-Larsen Act, there’s the pension tax on the seniors. It’s against the constitution, and these were people who worked their whole lives, followed the rules, did everything right, and were promised something, and all of a sudden, it’s being taken away. Repealing “Right to Work,” too. Putting money back into public schools, more financial transparency with charter schools and with the EAA (Education Achievement Authority), which is something our current representative has been fighting for. I also want to do something to get more people involved in the democratic process. Unfortunately, the other side has been trying to restrict voting; I want to make it easier. There are a lot of ideas: Early voting, same-day registration, voting by mail, making election day a holiday, that we’d like to explore.

FF: Having lived here all your life, what’s the best thing about the 27th District?

RW: The people. It’s such a friendly community. When I was going door-to- door campaigning, I’d knock and it turned out it was someone I went to school with, or their kids went to school with me, or my brother or sister or my cousins, or someone I played youth football or baseball with. There’s a real small-town feel. The cities of this district are great, their elected officials are working hard to keep them moving forward and make them family- friendly and wonderful places to live. I love being from here, I love living here, and I’m looking forward to raising my family here. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else!

FF: Has there been any sense of unreality at getting elected? A moment when you were at the orientation, and it was like, wow, am I really here?

RW: Yes, there was. It’s pretty crazy to think about it. People are calling me “Representative-Elect”… I’m like, just call me Robert. It’s funny to hear that… I’m no different than anyone else. I’m just a person who wants to help out. When I was going door-to-door during the campaign, I kept telling people that I’m available, that they can always call me, e-mail me, reach out to me, that their voices will be heard. I want to work for the people of this community, and I will never take that for granted.
