WOULD YOU RATHER DRINK just because, or drink for a cause?

Ferndale’s Pub Crawl has donated more than $150,000 to local charities such as the Michigan AIDS Coalition, the Ferndale Community Foundation, Fern Care and many more for more than a decade. “Different years, different charities.” says Craig Covey, founder and coordinator of Pub Crawl.

Covey started Pub Crawl in 1996. “We had formed a gay residents association in Ferndale called F.A.N.S.,” says Covey. “In addition to political work and civil engagement, we wanted to do social activities. So I came up with the idea of a Pub Crawl.”

The first Pub Crawl included a few bars and 36 people attended. Covey said everyone had such a great time they decided to make it an annual event. The Pub Crawl was opened to the entire community in its third year. “It started off as a gay community social event. Everyone was welcomed, but it was predominantly gay the first couple of years.” says Covey. In its fifth and sixth years, tourists started attending the event. “As the city grew, as downtown grew, we kept adding clubs and bars.” says Covey. Some of the venues have partnered with Pub Crawl since the beginning such as Danny’s Irish Pub, Como’s, SOHO, Rosie O’Grady’s, and Sneakers. Covey and his team are inviting all the new bars in Ferndale to participate in the 2015 Pub Crawl, such as The Fly Trap and Zeke’s Rock and Roll BBQ.

According to Covey, there has never been an arrest of a Pub Crawl attendee since its inception. He credits this success to educating bar hoppers on the dangers of drunk driving and by partnering with companies to drive people home. “Over the years we found different companies to provide rides. We also encourage people to stay in Ferndale and stay with a friend. We’ve had people camp out in back yards in tents.” Planning an event of this scale every year can wear on a person, but Covey said it’s the sense of community that makes it worthwhile. “The most fun part is the people. They have a blast and they meet new people. They’re very friendly, so there’s a lot of bonding.”

The 19th Annual Ferndale Pub Crawl is Friday, July 31 at Twist Night Club located at 22901 Woodward Avenue. Registration is from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and all participants must be 21-years-old to register. Covey invites companies to sponsor this community event. Registered sponsors for the 19th Annual Pub Crawl so far are Garden Fresh Gourmet, Rosie O’Grady’s, Pearl Vodka, Thursdays, Twisted Tavern,

Uber, and Between The Lines Newspaper. For more information about the 19th Annual Ferndale Pub Crawl visit www.ferndalepubcrawl.org. The website will be updated daily with new details. To sponsor this event or become a vendor contact Craig Covey at coveyc@oakgov.com or Monica Mills at mmills@michiganaidscoalition.org.

Saturday June 20

In celebration of the craft beer industry, Ultimate Fun Productions and Metro Times are pleased to announce another installment to the Royal Oak Beer Fest series – Summer Beer Fest – to be held in downtown Ferndale on Saturday, June 20. An all day festival, featuring multiple local retail vendors, food vendors and beverage companies, the event begins at noon and continues until 11:00 P.M. Admission into the festival will only cost attendees $10.

Benefiting Handy Hearts, the event will be an amazing experience in taste and sound including hot music to compliment cool brews. Breweries from around the world, across the state and down the street will showcase their unique libations – well over 150 beers total! The focus of Summer Beer Fest is the promotion of craft beers and the brewers that create them. This event is the perfect opportunity for beer aficionados, beer lovers and the casual beer drinker to speak to company representatives and brewers responsible for some of their favorite brews. It’s an opportunity to discover and taste new brews, seasonal beers and special “limited release” beers and ales.

“The Ferndale Area Chamber of Commerce is looking forward to Summer Beer Fest – produced by business member Metro Times – making its debut this June in Ferndale,” said Ashleigh Laabs, Executive Director Ferndale Area Chamber of Commerce. More information is available at www.ferndalesummerbeerfest.com.

Saturday, December 5

On Saturday, December 5, 2015, Ferndale’s Downtown will again commemorate the day in December 1933 that Congress and President Franklin D Roosevelt passed the 21st amendment, ending prohibition. What better way to mark this historic occasion than by enjoying legal libation with a twist of costumed history?

Venues will feature 1930s décor and offer special drink prices. Staff and patrons are encouraged to wear period costumes (gangsters, flappers, rum runners etc.) The event will raise funds for Ferndale Good Fellows who offer assistance to needy families during the holiday season. Last year, eight watering holes and over a dozen volunteers raised almost $4,000. The present economy is still challenging but those and additional folks are committed to offering support again.

Off-duty police officers work with the fire department and other service organizations as part of Good Fellows to ensure that each child in need is warm, sheltered, fed, and hopefully have a toy for the holiday. Donations will be collected through “passing the moonshine jug,” raffles, possible cover charges at some venues and through corporate contributions.

If you are a venue or a sponsor interested in joining the fun, please contact Larry or Monica Mills at 248-330-2328 or email monmil@sbcglobal.net.

Last year’s sponsors include:

• Tito’s Vodka
• Templeton Rye
• Sneakers

Anchored in the midst of a patch of industrious steel and stone, resting before the train tracks on the corner of Woodward Heights and Horton Street, you might be surprised to find a colorful and emi- nent dance studio. But here lies The Institution of Dance Arts, or IDA. Inside the cordial lobby waits a café-like countertop guarding rows of little black chairs for kids to sit, eat and draw. Once inside the bright vanilla decor of the main studio, a spacious and speck- less space popping with the movements of dancers of all ages, I meet with the owner and main instructor, Ida Lowback and she cheerfully grants me an interview.

At IDA, Lowback explains, they investigate dance as an art form and explore the instinctual need for movement. Students are given the freedom and security to explore their creativity. IDA’s profession- al and dedicated dance educators provide their students not only with the knowledge of dance movement, vocabulary, and history, but also with skill sets that will enhance their lives outside of dance. Offering classes in all genres to all ages and levels within a safe, nurturing, and educational environment, allow them to create life- long dancers who appreciate the art of movement.

FERNDALE FRIENDS: WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO SETTLE ON FERNDALE TO OPEN YOUR STUDIO?

IDA LOWBACK: I was born and raised in Royal Oak and grew up dancing throughout Oakland County. I always knew that when I started my own studio I wanted it close to home and in a culturally rich community. I was surprised to learn that Ferndale, being such an artistic and creative area, had no traditional dance studio (ballet,

jazz, tap, etc.) and so it was a perfect opportunity. Since we opened in September the community has been extremely welcoming and I have loved getting to know it and its residents; so much so I just purchased a house here!

FF: WHAT HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE BEEN LIKE TEACHING SO MANY DIFFERENT PEOPLE DANCE IN SUCH A COLORFUL CITY?

IL: It has been a pleasure. Dance is a universal language and brings people together. The people of Ferndale are known for being open-minded and community-oriented, and so teaching dance here has been both an exciting and rewarding experience.

FF: CONCERNING YOUR STUDIO AND ITS FUTURE, ARE THERE ANY GOALS OR PLANS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE ACHIEVED?

IL: My long-term goal for the studio is for it to become a cultural cornerstone of Ferndale and a second home for its students. A dance studio is successful when it becomes closely ingrained with its surrounding community and creates a space where students feel free and safe to share and explore the wonders of movement. My goal is that our students find an emotional outlet and a vehicle for personal development that guides them throughout their lives. I am confident that if I invest myself in my students, staff, and community, I can achieve this goal.

The Institution of Dance Arts is located at 701 Woodward Heights, Suite 130. Phone 248-697-2200 or visit their website at www.theinstitutionofdancearts.org

So now we are The Ferndale Area District Library. What does being a District Library mean? What happens next?

Well, actually, not much will change at first. Our mission remains the same: to strengthen the Ferndale community by providing access to materials and services that inform, enrich, entertain, and empower.

Visiting the library? Checking out books? Attending our concerts? Taking little readers to our family story hours? Accessing public computers? Finding all the latest movies in our DVD section? Those things won’t change. We’re still the same wonderful library you’ve been using all these past years.

We’ll still offer the same services and all the same access. We’ll continue to provide inter-loaned materials from the 60+ libraries connected to us through The Library Network of Oakland County, including thousands of free ebooks and audio books for download, along with professional reference librarians and circulation specialists here to help you access these resources and assist you with your research, help on the computers, and provide cutting-edge programs for all ages. We’ll remain an anchor to the downtown and the living room of the community.

We will, however, be operating under Michigan’s District Library Law, a more modern library statute that allows us more autonomy and flexibility than we have had in the past. The dedicated library millage of 1.96 mills that was

approved by voters in 2007 will remain in place for now. The District Library Establishment Act allows for funding of up to four mills, but any changes in tax funding will require voter approval.

Who’s in this District? The Ferndale Area District Library involves a partnership between the Library, the City of Ferndale, and the Ferndale Public Schools. The schools will not be contributing to library finances, and the library will not be involved in the operation of the schools’ media centers. However, the possibility of more funding for the library in the future could lead to more outreach efforts and services to Ferndale Public School students and staff, helping to support school success.

As a District Library, we’ll be governed by a seven-member Library Board. A provisional library board was appointed by the Ferndale City Council at their December meeting. The provisional board is made up of the six trustees who were previously elected to the Ferndale Public Library Board, plus an additional library advocate, resident Kevin Yezbick. The provisional board will be in place until the 2016 election.

Upcoming Kids/Family programming: Family Storytime: February 9, 2015. 6:30 P.M. Giddy’on up to our Wild West- themed storytime! All ages welcome.

Kid’s Open Mic on Feb 11, 2015, 4:00 P.M. Kids 12 and under will have the opportunity to perform or display their special talent in front of a group of their peers in the library’s community room! No registration required. Microphones will be available, but if you need any other accommodations (instrument cords, etc), please contact Jordan at prior to the event.

Attorney Erica Moise, 32, says she always wanted to practice law because she believe in civil rights. “I figure this is a great route to go in terms of being able to help people, to help change the laws, and help those who are disenfranchised.” Moise says.

Since October 2011, Moise has ben actively practicing criminal defense law. The legal system, she says, doesn’t always get to the root of the crime, which is sometimes drug and alcohol addictions. “That’s a big problem I see within the criminal justice system, is how we’re treating that problem.” mouse said. She wants to help her clients by providing a full serves law firm. “If somebody comes in with an addiction issue and legal problem, I can connect them to resources such as rehab facilities.” Moise says.

After graduating from Eastern Michigan University and then Wayne State’s law school program, Moise worked at a few law firms but is now self-employed. She plans to open an office for Moise Law later this year, hopefully in  Ferndale. Moise’s passion and drive for criminal defense mirrors her pursuit for LGBT legal rights. An activist for the LGBT community, Moise said it was her personal struggle with her own sexuality that led her to that role. “I came out as gay when I was 14 years old. So, having that experience so young, and kind of fighting the world, it really pushed me in this direction.” Moise said. “It’s been a lot of progress over the last 18 years and we’ve come so far from when I was a little 14-year-old in high school.” Moise said her law practice and activisms in the LGBT community both provide people with help. “But those two roles go together because when you become a defense attorney you are, in a sense, and activist for someone, You’re defending their rights, you’re trying to help them through the legal system, which can be very, very tricky.”

In addition to advocating on behalf of the LGBT community as president of the Stonewall Bar Association (a Michigan LGBT Bar Association,) Moise is also creating partnerships with businesses to expand the knowledge of LGBT law related issues. Moise, in conjunction with Affirmations, The Gender Identity Alliance Network, and Equality Michigan, are in the process of creating a coalition to provide LGBT law assistance. “By the Fall we want to get training in place for attorneys to handle LGBT clients.” Moise said.

Likewise, Moise is working with Jocelyn Benson, dean of Wayne State’s Law School, to implement a new program that would train lawyers in Michigan how to take LGBT clients on their issues and the law. Moise said a combination of Wayne State’s midtown location and urban setting give students a secial experience. “You get a lot of variety, especially with law, of real life experiences and real life settings.”

Moise Law can be reached at 248-629-0573. Business hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday thru Friday. Moise is available after hours or for emergencies. Email: erica.moise@gmail.com

Anyone driving on Woodward Avenue through Ferndale will recognize the famous marquee of the Magic Bag. Sandwiched between popular restaurants, the theater features an ever-revolving list of bands and movies beneath the iconic cat logo. The theater is popular for its intimate settings and incredible line-ups, but its residency in Ferndale’s history is not as well known.

The Magic Bag has been around a long time, under many different names, a centerpiece for Ferndale’s entertainment scene since the early 1920s. When it originally opened as the Ferndale Theater, it played feature films, newsreels, and animated specials. Patrons spent entire afternoons in the Ferndale Theater, catching up on current events and movies. For decades it was an incredibly popular theater with parking located in the middle median of Woodward.

In the 1960s the theater changed names to Studio North and changed its focus to independent films, playing artistic and foreign films that weren’t being shown anywhere else. Studio North’s unique movie choices attracted spectators from all over Oakland County.

By the mid 1970’s, the unique movies played at Studio North got a bit more racy. The iconic marquee on the ever- busy Woodward Avenue offered titles including Street Girls and Debbie Does Dallas, eventually including live dancers the line up. As the theater turned into a grindhouse, Oakland County and the city of Ferndale began to protest. Legal battles began

between the City and the theater. In 1989, Oakland County prevailed and shut down the recently renamed Déjà Vu.

In the early 1990’s, Jeremy Haberman worked with the previous owner to reopen the doors. Jeremy set out to renovate the theater and recreate it as a concert venue. Although he kept many original features like the marquee and globe lights, Jeremy worked with architects to redo the lobby and seating area. New tiers for the audience made sure that every seat in the house had a clear view of the stage. General admission seating rather than the theater seats offered more variety and flexibility in staging shows.

Throughout the last twenty-odd years, the Magic Bag has become one of the most renowned concert venues in the Metro Detroit area. The theater has featured a variety of musicians and comedians at reasonable ticket prices. From classic rock to ex-pop stars, there is a show for everyone on any given month.

Upcoming events include the Mega 80’s, JD McPherson and Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band. The Magic Bag occasionally features the Brew & View, playing classic and independent movies like the theater’s predecessor while operating a full-service bar. The theater is also available to rent out for public or private events.

The Magic Bag is continuing its growth throughout 2015. Follow them on Facebook or at www.themagicbag.com to keep up with their packed schedule.

The best and brightest local individuals and businesses were honored at the Ferndale and Oak Park Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Awards and Recognition Gala on November 14. The Gala was held at the Twist Night Club, and presented by Gage Products Company of Ferndale and Paramount Precision Products of Oak Park.

The event lived up to its “gala” billing, with entertainers, strolling waitresses with appetizers, a silent auction featuring products and services donated by over 90 area businesses and individuals, and the opportunity to rub elbows with the smart, driven, and just plain friendly folks of the Ferndale and Oak Park business community. A bar overflowed with chips, salsa, and hummus donated by Garden Fresh Gourmet while a string quartet played softly in the glow of decorative lights.

“The Artist in You” was the theme of this year’s event. The CoC announced the Art Mural Project, in which the work of two sophomore, two junior, and two senior students from Ferndale High School will be chosen for outdoor display at various locations in Ferndale. Chosen students also have the opportunity to pick up scholarship money. Photos of young Ferndale High School artists were shown on TVs, and a selection of their work was available for viewing at the Gala.

The highlight of the evening, of course, was the awards ceremony. The winners of each category were:

  • Business Person of the Year: Dean Bach (Dino’s Lounge and M Brew).
  • New Business of the Year: Michigan Youth Arts (Marianne Dorais).
  • Special Service Award: Jack Aronson (Garden Fresh Gourmet).
  • Best of Ferndale: Tie between Rust Belt Market (Chris and Tiffany Best) and Ferndale Friends
  • Best of Oak Park: Tai Fai Restaurant (Bonnie Deng).
  • Volunteer of the Year: Rita Van Keymuelen (Creative Office Designs).

As a member of the Ferndale Friends team, I am, of course very excited about winning the “Best of Ferndale” award. It’s especially humbling when you consider the fine businesses and organizations we were up against.
