Business

Ron and Pollyanna Robling have proven to be a winning husband-and-wife team! The Roblings own The Purple Peacock Boutique, located at 2750 Hilton Rd in Ferndale, alongside their estate sales business, R & S Resale which is located at 3345 Hilton.

I recently met with Ron Robling and his store manager, Liz Moritz, at The Purple Peacock. I was instantly intrigued and distracted by the wide array of attractive home furnishings and decorations! As we conversed, comfortably seated on leather couches, it became clear that the Roblings’ business efforts are paying off, and they are expanding at an impressive rate. The on-site and off-site estate sales they organize from start to finish are proving popular. Robling explained that many items in the sales are new or gently-used (often brand-name and designer goods also), so great deals are plentiful.

Even though Robling loves his work these days, it was not always his passion! He described starting out in resale/estate sales with his grandmother: “I hated it, every aspect of it,” he recalled, with a laugh. “I worked in the auto industry for many years afterwards, but returned to this business…and now I really enjoy it!”

These days, the Roblings’ main goal is to take the headache factor out of estate liquidation. In fact, some family members have joined forces with the Roblings, creating a solid team. Starting out in a small building, ff-jj-pp-manithe Roblings expanded into two buildings (off-site sales are held at 3345 Hilton. Very often, R & S have three estate sales in progress each weekend. Additionally, Robling aims to start hosting regular auctions, he added, “maybe on the first Thursday of each month.”

I asked Robling to summarize the process of estate liquidation. Many people have an estate sale at home (referred to as on-site). R & S will handle all the details of organizing the sale. However, in many cases, this is not possible and an off-site sale is necessary. With this alternate scenario, R & S will pick up all belongings and transfer them via professional movers to their sale building on Hilton. In some cases, where not many belongings are involved, sales with other clients may be combined.

What can you expect to see at a typical estate sale? Everything and anything! “We have even had vehicles for sale in the past…mostly the ypical items include furniture, clothing, artwork, jewelry, and so you must be prepared for sales to come and go in a single weekend…items do not tend to stick around” Robling warned!

DR. ANGELO ZERVOS’ OUTSTANDING reputation locally was no secret to me in advance of this interview. He has also ecently performed some extensive dentistry work on two close friends. So in my mind, he already had something akin to superhero status!

Zervos has a disarmingly personable manner, combined with an enthusiastic approach. Working hard in the front office are his long-time employees, Chris McDaniel and Kim Leamon, along with several experienced dental hygienists.

What was the special pull that drew Dr. Zervos into dentistry? He recalled, “…I always wanted to be a doctor…and I also liked to build things and work with my hands.” He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1977 with distinction, and then progressed on to graduate in 1983 from the University of Detroit Mercy Dental School. He briefly described his dedicated work approach, “…I have worked as a dentist since graduating…it is a huge part of my life and my patients are like family to me…some of them have been with me for 30 years! I truly consider myself a Ferndale dentist…” With a smile, Dr. Zervos said, “…I feel like a grandfather, because patients will bring their children, and after the years pass, they are bringing in their children too!”

Dr. Zervos’ wife, Mary, grew up in the Ferndale area (wheareas, he grew up in Detroit), and so they were both happy to live and base their careers here. They were married in 1986 and ave four children, who are all doing very well, …although none are following in my dentistry footsteps yet!” he jokingly added.

Another part of Dr.Zervos’ overall mission in life is that of education; he taught pediatric dentistry (as an Associate Dean at the University of Detroit) for ten years, and looks forward to teaching more in the future. He is currently an active member in numerous professional organizations and educational programs, and likes to attend ongoing educational classes with his staff. The whole office building was acquired in November of 1996 with one of his best friends of 50 years, a lawyer named William Orlow. Together, they designed the space completely, according to their separate career needs. He ecent additions are the high-tech, adjustable LED lights in each room. There is also a state-of-the-art lab present, plus all-digital x-ray equipment. Clearly, no expense has been spared in keeping the office completely clean, updated and patient-friendly.

Zervos has seen quite a few changes/advances in the field over the course of his career!Implants have been revolutionized to be a lot more comfortable, and current insurance plans cover a lot more than previously. Oral cancer has been on the rise, so he ensures his patients receive an oral cancer screening. Cosmetic dentistry has also increased in popularity, and quite aside from the health benefits of good oral hygiene, a great smile can certainly boost confidence. Dr. Zervos recalled one patient who had been a soldier. “Once his teeth were redone, he changed his whole life in a healthy way…it was great to see it!”

Zervos firmly believes in giving back to the community. For example, he volunteers hours of dentistry time with FernCare (the local clinic for low-income/uninsured patients). Also, he was involved for 15 years in a co-op program that the Ferndale High School ran. “Many of these high-schoolers went on to pursue a career in dentistry!” Dr. Zervos added. He is particularly proud of a young woman that he mentored for years, Alexandria Pappas, who is entering the University of Detroit Mercy Dental this fall.

Dr. Zervos is located at:  24100 Woodward Ave., in Pleasant Ridge.
Office hours:  Mon, 10am-7pm; Tues & Weds, 8am-5pm; Th, 7am-3pm; Fri, Closed; Sat, 8am-2pm; Sun, Closed.

Just as the grass turns lush and the spring buds finally bloom, one of Ferndale’s favorite candle, lotion, and everything else shops is growing right in season. Green Daffodil is celebrating its tenth birthday, and expanding their store as the perfect present to all.

Most famous for their handmade, vegan, 100 percent non-GMO soy candles, Green Daffodil has grown over the years to include other homemade products, gifts and affordable vintage finds. Owners and best friends Anne Simonette and Siouxsan Miller say they are happy to fill the void of the gift shop niche in Ferndale.

“There is such limited retail here and we like being known as Ferndale’s gift shop because we carry a whole assortment of things from greeting cards, kitchenware, and pottery from a local artist, to jewelry and then we have obviously all our handmade stuff,” Miller says.

Located at 624 Livernois Ave. Green Daffodil will host their grand reopening on Saturday, June 25th from 11am until 5pm. The location was originally dedicated mostly to production of the bath and body line for their wholesale business, which sells to over 100 stores across the country. They purchased the empty space behind their shop and spent the winter expanding, instead of hibernating like the rest of us. This expansion provides a stronger retail presence and storefront.

“It’s just allowing us to be a little bit more efficient with our production because our wholesale is forever growing,” Miller says. “We were at a point where we couldn’t mentally or physically grow our business in the ff-jj-gd-insidespace that we were in; we will just be able to work better and smarter.” The new storefront is inviting and relaxed with cool, vibrant green walls and thoughtful product arrangements that open into the studio where visitors can get a peek at how their favorite products are created.

“We display it in a way that is very fun and friendly and the products we’re bringing in are thoughtful and different, maybe not something everyone else is carrying and that is a huge task,” Miller says. “It’s something that’s important to us.”

The most important aspect of their business, though, is that the product is quality and cost efficient.

“A lot of times companies are really over the top with packaging but then the product is mediocre. We are all about the product being what soy is supposed to be — long burning, smells amazing and good for you,” Miller says. “We try to do limited packaging; we want the actual product to speak for itself, not the bells and whistles.”

“We call it an affordable, everyday luxury; so people can actually burn the candle instead of buying a $35 candle and thinking ‘When are we gonna burn it,’ you can buy our large tin for $12.50 and you can burn it for a long time and enjoy it,” Simonette adds.

The grand reopening will allow visitors to get the full retail experience of Green Daffodil and a chance to buy and smell all their products with daily sales, food, refreshments and some of the store’s outside vendors on site to discuss their own products.

“The city is doing a ribbon-cutting because we never had that and we are kind of branding it as a grand reopening to get the public to really know that we are for sure a retail store,” Miller says. “It’s not a whisper, we are shouting it out!”

WHAT? Me? Why? Just tell them I love dogs. Dogs are my life.” This was my riend and boss Julie Andrew’s reaction when I told her that Ferndale Friends wanted to interview her. She laughed, and gave in.

Julie, born and raised in the Detroit area, has lived in Ferndale with her spouse and business partner, Kelly McKinstry, since 1996. When they’re not in Ferndale, you can find them in downtown Detroit, often returning from the Eastern Market with produce they share. But they find most of what they want in Ferndale, said Julie.

They opened Bubble & Bark (doggy daycare, grooming, boarding) almost ten years ago. Everyone who walks ff-jj-bb-jathrough the door becomes family. Today, music was playing, Rodney was hanging with the boarders, the groomers were clipping, and Julie and Megan were on the floor playing with a new friend, a 13-year-old beagle.

Beagles are an important fixture at B&B. “Jazz” was Julie and Kelly’s first beagle. Rescued from an abusive owner, they did their best to rehome her. No luck. Jazz was “hell on wheels, she destroyed everything.” Julie used to sit in the driveway and cry before going into the house to deal with her. She was a smartie, who learned how to open the refrigerator and unzip purses.

And yet, when they finally found someone willing to take Jazz, they couldn’t give her up. “She was the smartest dog I’ve ever known. She changed my life.” At home, it’s been beagles ever since.

When Zola had a litter, Julie and Kelly shared puppies with friends and family, including Julie’s sister Jane who also lives in Ferndale and works tirelessly in animal rescue. Julie spoke proudly of her sister
“She’s the real deal. She can’t look away,” when there are animals who need help. The extended family has regular beagle parties at B & B when the pups show up on the same day and, as Julie says, they are so “flippin’cute”.

But when we talk dogs at Bubble & Bark, there are lots of stories about Winston, Milly, Milo, Bailey, Cupid, Cooper and Floyd – to name a few. They come to play, to sleep over, to visit Robin and Terrie for baths, hair and nails. They come in for a self-serve bath in one of the big tubs or to get food and treats.

Bubble & Bark was the first dog care facility to open in Ferndale. Julie and Kelly own a house down the street from the business, but they didn’t see “home” for weeks when they were getting the business on its feet. Julie said, “Don’t write this, but we used to shower in the groom tubs, because we didn’t want to leave the dogs.”

They now employ three daycare workers and two more who work the front of the store, along with the groomers. What’s the best part of running a small business? “Getting close to your staff. They become family. Getting to know the dog families, following them through their lives. My life has been so enriched by the dogs and their owners.” The hardest thing about small business? “Watching employees move on. Losing families who relocate, being present as dogs become ill or reach the end of their lives.”

We talked about Beth, a beagle mix who was the queen mother of Bubble & Bark. “When she died, it changed the energy here. The earth shifted. And I miss her and her owner to this day.” Then there are the dogs like ff-jj-dd-ja-kissCooper Simmons, who’ve recovered from serious illness, the dog whose owner left and never came back, and our beloved Ham Haberman, who we all wanted to adopt when her owner Jeremy Haberman passed away. Loving dogs is not on the job application, but I’m betting it’s one of Julie and Kelly’s top requirements when they hire staff.

Ferndale is a dog-friendly town. The dog-care business is expanding. I asked Julie about the competition: our new dog park, other day care facilities. She is glad people are investing in their dog’s care.

“Every business offers something different. I think we all can survive.” She acknowledges the challenge of trying to “remain a small business without losing the edge you need to survive.” Mostly, she talked about the joy of being a part of the dog community. “This business, the dogs and people, saved me (during tough times). They consume 95 per cent of my life and I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Visit Bubble & Bark, celebrating ten years of tender loving care for dogs in Ferndale. Ask for Julie. You and your dogs will love her as much as we do.

Bubble & Bark is located at 686 Livernois, Ferndale 248-544.9244 (WAGG)

LONG TIME FERNDALE CHAMBER of Commerce member, animal rescue enthusiast and vegan; these are only a couple of the labels that fit Carol Jackson.

I am greeted at her door by a variety of cats. All told, she is fostering five from the Michigan Humane Society. They all have names. Cupid is her giant brindle greyhound from the Motor City Greyhound Rescue. Gentle and calm, he fits right in with all the felines and serves as the centerpiece on the couch in the fuzzy pile of lucky animals.

Originally from Michigan, Carol moved back from California, and she has been a homeowner in Ferndale for 14 years. “I started in the mortgage industry many years ago. I wanted to connect with the people in Ferndale, so I sought out the Ferndale Chamber of Commerce to do that,” shares Carol. That decision sparked the foundation of an accumulation of friends, neighbors and knowledge that has grown and lasted far beyond her aspirations as a mortgage broker. Through her work with the Chamber and through her own business, Bits ‘N Pieces Small Business Solutions, her warmth and ability to connect with the community has blossomed into a network of people who know her and care about her.

Carol had only received her diagnosis of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma three or four weeks before I interviewed her for this article. The massive shift she has had to make in all aspects of her life to accommodate cancer in that short amount of time is stunning. Carol was a long-time member of the Ferndale Chamber of Commerce until just recently. She has been a member for over ten years, and recently served as interim executive director for the Chamber three times over a two-year span.

“Two years ago when we lost our executive director at the Chamber, I was the only one with the flexibility in my schedule to take on the interim role while we looked for a new Executive Director. The person that we hired didn’t last long, so I took it over again. Once again, the newly-hired ED did not last long, so back in October (2015), I took over the Chamber again for six months.”

During the second time that Carol Jackson took over the reins at the Ferndale Chamber, she began to feel that something was “off” in terms of her health. Mostly, she felt tired. “Fortunately, I have two incredible doctors who listened to me and followed through to really figure out what was going on. I give a lot of credit to Dr. Joel Kahn, one of those doctors.” Dr. Kahn is a plant-based cardiologist, and was looking for heart-related issues with Carol’s symptoms, and ended up seeing something unusual in one of the tests that came back that led to her cancer diagnosis.

“Because he listened to me and he ordered these tests – if it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t even know I was sick. Listen to your body. If it feels weird, something is going on,” she said adamantly.
“I had my first chemo today,” Carol explains. “Once I got the diagnosis, I started the process of switching every-thing in my life completely around.”
Carol has already gone out and purchased bandanas for the inevitable loss of hair. She is also having a specialized hair replacement piece made by an organization in West Bloomfield called Raydiance for Women.

“I am going to transition that as softly as I can with a sense of humor,” expressed Carol with a smile. Carol understands what a difference it makes in her quality of life to have a full head of hair. “You cannot tell me that people do not treat you differently,” she emphasizes.

She wants people to see her as they have always seen her, but more than that, she wants to see herself. The hair piece will give her the opportunity to look in the mirror and see Carol. She doesn’t have to look at a reflection that only shows her cancer.

One of her biggest challenges is wondering if or when she can ever trust her body again. Other challenges include keeping her energy up, juggling her demanding vitamin schedule, being able to continue to work and earn a living, and of course, paying for all her medical expenses.

One of the most wonderful things that have come out of her diagnosis a few weeks ago is the outpouring of love and support from the community. Neighbors and friends are bringing her food and walking her dog. Upbeat messages and happy memories on her Facebook page lift her spirits.

What does Carol need? Sure, help walk her dog, Cupid; or better yet, go foster an animal from a shelter. She would probably like some meals delivered, but the biggest thing that she is looking for is positive messages and upbeat support. No upsetting words or stories about “incurable” cancer or sad stories of people who have died from cancer.

Carol’s is determined to have a happy ending with cancer, but in the meantime, she is looking for all the happy moments she can muster!

DO NOT CALL MIKE LENNON A POLITICIAN. He much prefers the title “public servant,” because he truly believes a government official is there to serve the will of the people, not their own agenda. This comes across when he describes the characteristics of an ideal councilperson. He mentions things like, “You have to vote with your heart and your conscience…you can’t keep everybody happy…you’re at the will of the people and what they want.”

Public service is in Mike’s blood. His father, Bernie Lennon, was mayor of Ferndale and also an Oakland ff-ml-officialCounty commissioner at the only time that the Commission had a Democratic majority, according to longtime family friend Danny Reedy. Bernie Lennon also served the Blanchard administration as Deputy Director of the Department of Labor, and also ran the Michigan State Fair.

Mike attended the Ferndale Public Schools. He went to Roosevelt Elementary School, Lincoln Junior High, and Ferndale High School. He was a Ferndale Police Officer from 1977 to 2002. And then he served on the Ferndale City Council from 2003 to 2015. He also worked for Garden Fresh Salsa for seven years, until they were bought by Campbell’s. Now, according to Lennon, he is “working on his golf swing.”

Mike Lennon loves Ferndale. He can’t say enough wonderful things about his town. He calls Ferndale a “walkable, bikeable community” full of “nice restaurants, nice bars, nice boutiques, specialty stores.” He says that “if you walk 9 Mile you’ll be fascinated by the different types of stores, what you can buy, and what you can eat.”

He also pointed out that Ferndale hosts many large public events during the summer, and “we just passed a bond last year for our parks and roads.” He also points to the fact that people come here because “they can buy a house at a good, reasonable price.” When asked, point-blank, why a business should locate in Ferndale, he says, “Because you’re going to the customers.”

Acknowledging a problem exists, Lennon says “the current council is working on a parking solution.”

Time spent in city government gives a person a close-up look at government at the state-level, too. So it should not come as a surprise that Mike has opinions about our leaders in Lansing. While he is quick to point out that “we have a good state represen-tative” (Robert Wittenberg), he is highly critical of others in state government for putting their party ahead of Michigan’s needs. He says that revenue-sharing is nonexistent” and that they are “wiping out little cities one by one.”

“They don’t vote with their heart and soul,” observes Mike, “that’s what I did.”

On a much more personal note, I asked our sports-loving beer-drinking former councilman if there was anything no oneml jgknew about him (and would be printable). It took a few moments for Mike to come up with an answer because, as he said, “What you see is what you get.” After some thought, he says, “I like a romantic movie now and then.” Also, besides reading the newspaper regularly, he enjoys the work of such novelists as Tom Clancy, John Grisham, and James Patterson.

Craig S. Covey on Mike Lennon
CRAIG COVEY (a candidate for Oakland County sheriff) worked with Mike, both as a fellow councilman and later, when Craig was mayor. Covey mentioned that Mike “took over after his younger brother, David, lost his life in a car accident.” He described the two brothers as “very honest and forthright…they were the original voices to ‘tell it like it is’… both brothers always tried to represent the working people, the average resident, ff-ml-gcwith common sense and no nonsense.” I asked Craig if he had any really good Mike Lennon stories. “There are plenty of good stories I could share, though not all of them in a family newspaper,” Covey replied. Covey said Mike “could use gruff and salty language sometimes, and more than once a four-letter word escaped his mouth with him not always realizing the microphone was picking it up.” Craig’s favorite Mike Lennon story took place at Como’s. The two were sitting at the patio bar and Mike “remarked how great it was that he was there with hundreds of women. He said, ‘Covey, you and I are the only guys in the whole place.’ I had to point out that it was ‘First Wednesday,’ also known as lesbian night at Como’s.

Mayor David Coulter
I WAS NOT SUPRISED WHEN MAYOR COULTER described Mike Lennon as a “pretty blunt guy who overflowed with pride for his children, who doted after his Mom and who teared up on his last night of Council. He’s got ff-ml-mayor-dca huge heart he doesn’t always show, but it’s part of what makes him special.” Coulter “always appreciated Mike’s sense of humor and ability to lighten up serious discussions.” Dave sat beside him on the council, and tells how “many times after I’d get up from the table for some reason I would come back to candy wrappers and other trash in my chair. At first I’d pretend it wasn’t there, but it didn’t take long to learn to always check my chair first.” Most of the things his girlfriend, Sue McCleary, told me were things I had also heard from others. She mentioned that “Mike loved this city (and) everyone loves him,” that “his family lived here forever,” and how it is “their heart.” However, she did mention two things no one else said. She told me that he never spoke from prepared notes, rather, he always spoke off the cuff. He responded to every question from his heart, without notes. And, Sue told me that Mike is so trusted in this city that “everyone (still) calls Mike Lennon when they have issues” they can’t seem to solve. Mike regularly takes calls from Ferndale residents who don’t know where else to turn with their problems.

When asked about the future, Mike just smiles and politely refuses to answer. Sue clarifies this by quoting one of Lennon’s favorite saying, “You never show your line up before game time.”

But whatever is in store, Ferndale will continue to benefit from the presence of Mike and the Lennon family for a long time to come.

Thank you, Mike, for making Ferndale a wonderful place to live and work.

The Boston Tea Room has something for everyone, according to owner Heatherleigh Navarre. “We like to say that we are a bookstore, a tea room, and that we sell products for your spiritual journey, no matter what journey that is.” Lee said.

ff12678_Page_1_Image_0001Navarre opened the first Boston Tea Room in Wyandotte and a second store in Ferndale in 2009. She outgrew the space after five years and moved across the street to a bigger store two years ago. “We opened up a second location on this side of town because we had a lot of clients who, honestly, didn’t want to have to drive all the way downriver. So they kept really encouraging and asking for a shop on this side of town,” Navarre said. She says Ferndale’s downtown atmosphere is a good fit and attracts a lot of business. “We have a lot of people who walk in the shop just because they see all the beautiful crystals, jewelry, or candles in the window, and they may not have any idea that we’re doing tarot card readings or psalm readings behind the curtain, but they’re really intrigued by what they see. So we have a lot of clients that just come in to shop or to browse,” Navarre said.

The Boston Tea Room offers over 60 mostly organic loose-leaf teas, and has complimentary tea of the day for patrons. “I have people who come in every day just to see what tea is in the pot and we love doing tea tastings and that kind of thing. So we really have something for everyone. We’ve got the retail and we’ve got the services. We also have the tea cafe area where people will come in and sit and chat with each other,” Navarre said.

ff12678_Page_1_Image_0003The Boston Tea Room aims to provide spiritual support and items such as cards, crystals, books, CDs and DVDs to help nurture people on their spiritual journey, no matter their chosen religion. “So if you come from a Catholic upbringing, we have The Boston Tea Room: Helping Guide People on their Spiritual Journey jewelry with the saints on it or little pocket saints that you can carry with you. If you’re exploring the Buddhist path or Buddhist philosophy we have Buddhist mala beads and statues and that kind of thing. If you’re interested in investigating earthcentered, pagan traditions we have books and items for that,” Navarre explained.

The tea room also offers home and office blessings, meditation classes, tarot classes, tea tastings, mediumship classes, how to read the crystal ball, how to read tea leaves, and much more. “One of my favorites is we’re combining the new trend of adult coloring with the tarot. It’s like an adult coloring tarot session where your coloring a tarot card and you get a little mini reading of what it means,” Navarre said.

Navarre is a big supporter of Michigan artists and has rotating art shows. The Boston Tea Room sells items by Michigan artists such as jewelry, pottery, and embroidered tea towels to name a few.

The Boston Tea Room is located at 224 West 9 Mile Road. Operation hours are Monday to Saturday from 11:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. and Sundays from noon to 6:00 P.M. Call (248) 548-1415 or visit them on the web at www.bostontearoom.com

Providing Trusted Advice in Ferndale for over 13 Years

THE ENTREPRENEURIAL WIFE/HUSBAND TEAM of Eric Uzzle (agency owner) and Peggy Uzzle (executive account manager) take the stress out of selecting insurance coverage. During a recent meet at their open-plan office (at 733 E. 9 Mile Rd), I was instantly impressed by their relaxed, upbeat attitude. With many years of joint experience servicing the needs of both local and State-wide customers, Uzzle and Uzzle have consistently offered diverse, competitive insurance and financial options.

Their primary vision is, “…to protect our customers’ assets and to help them build wealth.”

This is not your average agency: they pride themselves on a very personal, family-oriented style. Using a system that incorporates a completely ‘onlinefriendly’ (paperless) approach is what they consider to be one extra key to their success. This gives all customers the flexible option of either face-toface consultations, or doing business remotely via the internet (or both, as preferred.)

An additional component of their winning business approach is, naturally, a high level of customer service. In their words, “…we go the extra mile to give people good service, and the best price for the product.” This often means working long hours to ensure customers have all their questions answered in a timely, accurate manner.

Uzzle and Uzzle both mentioned enjoying the diversity of clients in Ferndale- a City which has both a strong Community feel, and also attracts a growing number of young professionals.

The Uzzle and Uzzle Agency have a wide variety of services to offer, in addition to the traditional auto, home, motorcycle and renters insurance policies. They always have a member of their staff who is dedicated to providing financial advice/options. Services offered include: Mortgage protection; Life insurance; Annuities; Disability insurance, Commercial insurance and coverage for rental properties. Clearly, quite an impressive array of policies to choose from!

For a no-pressure quote, feel free to stop by their office soon- or reach out using the contact information listed below.

THE KELLY’S KIDS FOUNDATION provides support to low-income and disadvantaged families suffering from life-threatening illnesses in the Metro Detroit area using enrichment classes, training, financial support, and personal care.

Zsa Zsa C. Hubbard started this foundation in response to an illness that her mother, Kelly Hubbard, contracted in 2014 after she wore a scarf bought at a popular clothing store. Initially, she developed a rash which covered her entire body. Eventually, Mrs. Hubbard was completely disabled by the illness which appeared to be an allergic reaction. Throughout the next year, she was hospitalized over 40 times, attended numer-ous doctor visits, and received many treatments. She stayed in the hospital for months at a time. She received over ten blood transfusions, a feed-ing tube, suffered loss of muscle control, and underwent chemotherapy treatments. It was a life-changing experience for Kelly Hubbard and her family.

Due to her illness, her insurance was terminated, she was fired from her place of employment, her home was foreclosed on, and a plethora of overdue bills kept coming in. Due to the financial strain in her life, her daughters took over the responsibilities of their mother’s finances, parental rights, and household contributions. There were not many organizations for the Hubbard family to turn to for help. Kelly Hubbard sadly passed away on March 24, 2015.

Zsa Zsa C. Hubbard, chairman of the board, attended Bowling Green State University in Ohio, where she was selected to be a part of the distinguished Presidential Leadership Academy. Hubbard put aside her college career when she discovered she was pregnant with her first child. Later, as she worked for the Wayne County Clerk’s Office as Deputy County Clerk, she was guided by Wayne County Clerk, the Honorable Cathy M. Garrett, and other mentors, such as Bishop John Drew Sheard, Evangelist Karen Clark Sheard, Alpha Phi Alpha President Dr. Richard T. James, Alpha Kappa Alpha member Tonya Champion, and a host of others whose guidance helped to make her the woman who is the head of this foundation.

Other board members of the foundation include Dr. Trina Lynn Ross, who is a veteran within the Information Technology industry, having over fifteen years of experience in providing technological solutions across health care and automotive organizations, and Ariss Pierce, PT, DPT, Cert. MDT Specialist and owner of Trainers Physical Therapy. She is a native Detroiter and Doctor of Physical Therapy who has a passion for educating others on how to achieve physical wellness.

How can you help? Visit kellyskidsfoundation.org and make a donation. As Zsa Zsa says, “There are so many families that need support as they transition from having a well, able-bodied family member to changing your whole life around to fit the needs of that sick individual. Sickness can be hard, especially if one of those individuals made the majority of the household income for the family. The Kelly’s Kids Foundation provides families with direction, support and resources to assist them during these difficult times.

Nature’s Playhouse offers a nurturing and stimulating environment for family play, learning, fitness and fun.

It’s amazing how technology has and will continue to flourish, but on the flip side I wonder if the children of today and the future understand what it’s like to be a kid. In today’s world kids have access to cell phones, tablets, and other sorts of technical devices that weren’t around just a few years ago. For those of you, like me, who wonder if the kids of today aren’t getting enough opportunities for improvised play and outdoor activities, there’s a business in the heart of Ferndale that gave me the feeling of being a kid again. Welcome to ‘Nature’s Playhouse.’

ff12657_Page_1_Image_0001When I walked in the front door it had the nature look. There were tree branches hanging from the ceiling and on the walls that gave me the idea of it being a treehouse. The space is warm, inviting, and comfortable, with lots of interesting shapes and colors, and non-toxic, allnatural equipment that attracts attention and invites exploration. I sat down with three of the business owners in this tranquil space and I asked them how this magical place came about.

Sarah (a social worker) had the idea, and through networking connected with Mikki (an infant mental health specialist). They linked up with Juliana (an expert in physical wellness.) Three women who had never met before, with different degrees, somehow found themselves doing business together, and have been doing business since November 2015 when they purchased it from the previous owner. Originally, they presented some ideas to the former owners they believed would add to the business, but as fate would have it, it was up for sale. They took the plunge.

“We saw how valuable of a resource it was for the community and we thought it was essential for us to keep it open to families,” Sarah stated. Their mission is to create a nonjudgmental place promoting social support for the children and their families, a place where families with diverse backgrounds, social economics, and ethnicities can come together and be a part of a common unity. Not to be confused as a daycare, they offer activities such as unstructured drop-in play, yoga, belly dancing, prenatal workshops and much more.

They agreed that what makes them unique is that they are very community based and are not like your typical business. They love the support from the families around town. It’s the type of place that’s great if you have a family and want to be around other families and grow together. Services include drop-in play, various educational courses, fitness classes and free support groups. For more information, please visit www.naturesplayhouse.com
