June 6

There’s no better childhood memory than riding your bike around the neighborhood with friends after school. The summer breeze that flows across your face while riding a bike is like no other. For more than seven years the Ferndale Recreation Department, Rotary Club, Police and Fire Department has been helping the community get ready for bike season, and 2015 is no different. Ferndale’s Annual Bike Rodeo will take place on Saturday, June 6 from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. at Ferndale High School. It’s designed for children to come and learn about the safety, and fun, of riding a bike.

“In the past several years we have put this event on in conjunction with our youth day softball opening day.” says Jill Manchik, recreation director. An opening day ceremony at the high school has been planned on June 6 as well.

The Bike Rodeo will have its usual activities including: a free bike skills test provided by the police department; free bike inspection provided by Downtown Ferndale Bikes; free bike helmets (kids must bring bike for free helmet) provided by the Rotary Club; free bike license (for Ferndale residents only), and a free fire safety house tour, pending the fire department’s availability.

This year the Recreation Department welcomes sponsors that want to give away food and drink to attendants (sponsors are not permitted to sell products).

For more information about Bike Rodeo visit www.ferndalemi.gov or contact Jill Manchik at jmanchik@ferndalemi.gov.

Drayton Avenue Co-op Preschool (DACP) invites the local community to attend its 23rd Annual Silent Auction, themed “Get Greek, a Toga Party!” This adult-only event, our biggest fundraiser of the year, will be held on Friday, April 24 from 6:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. at Drayton Avenue Presbyterian Church at 2441 Pinecrest in Ferndale

Advance tickets are $10 per person and available by calling (586) 260-7218, or they can be purchased at the door on the night of the event for $15 per person. Guests will enjoy live performances from local musicians, as well as appetizers and adult beverages donated by local restaurants.

Bidding on Silent Auction items will begin at 6:00 P.M. with staggered ending times. Local businesses and artists, Michigan businesses, as well as international names, including Walt Disney World, The Henry Ford, and Trader Joe’s are some of the donors providing a wide variety of goods to bid on.

Fundraising and donations help keep tuition low for DACP’s unique, high-quality educational program. Drayton Avenue Co-op Preschool was established in 1949 as a non-profit, play-based cooperative preschool for children ages 2 to 4. It is a non-denominational organization that welcomes children of any race, sex, creed or national origin.

As DACP relies on parents and caregivers to volunteer in the classroom alongside the teacher, it is a tight-knit community where lifelong friendships are forged between families. With a strong tradition that spans more than 60 years, the continued success of DACP depends on community support, as well as new families joining the program.

For more information about DACP’s 23rd Annual Silent Auction, contact co-chair Kim Hart at (586) 260-7218 or kimi.hart@hotmail.com. Details about the event and auction items can also be found on the Drayton Avenue Co-op Preschool facebook page or at www.draytonpreschool.org.

Saturday, June 13

It all started in 1985 on an athletic track in Tacoma, Washington. Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran around the track for 24 hours, raising $27,000 for the American Cancer society. A year later, supporters joined him and the event began to grow. Today, Relay for Life events are held in hundreds of cities around the world. Throughout its history, Relay for Life has raised awareness of cancer, given people a way to connect with fellow patients, survivors, caregivers, and supporters, and raised $5 billion for cancer research. Today, organized by the American Cancer Society, companies and individuals form teams and raise money, the goal being to have someone from their team running or walking the track for the duration of the event.

I spoke to Michele Sibula and Christina Linn of the ACS about this year’s event. The first thing to know is that this year’s relay is at a new location, Martin Road Park, located at 1615 East Lewiston Avenue. “More public access, new neighborhoods.” Christina smiles. Event leadership teams can customize Relays to fit a particular city, and Ferndale’s promises to be fun and unique.

Ferndale’s Relay will run for 14 hours, from 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 13 until the stroke of midnight to welcome in Sunday, June 14. Registration opens at 10:00 A.M. Opening ceremonies begin at 11:00 A.M. with a survivor speaker, music from the choir and the presentation of the colors. As the race begins, the first lap goes to the survivors, celebrating another year of having beaten cancer, while those who have been by their side cheer them on along the sidelines. Then the caregivers take their turn, then the teams take the track. But there’s much more to do than just walking or running around. There will also be a “kids zone,” with activities for the whole family, including bounce houses, games, and entertainment.

In the afternoon, there will be a “fight back” ceremony, inspiring people to take action and make a commitment to fight cancer for themselves, for their loved ones, and for the community. You can make a pledge, for example, to eat healthier, or make a donation, or to remind family members to get screened. There will be speakers with inspirational stories of survival as well.

You can also learn more about ACS CAN, the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network, the lobbying and legislative arm of the ACS. ACS CAN has scored numerous victories for public health, including banning smoking in public facilities.
There will be a silent auction as well, with proceeds supporting the ACS and its work. Individuals or companies interested in donating items for the auction may contact Christina at the email address below.

As dusk comes on, the always-moving Luminaria Ceremony begins. In it, we take the time to remember the people who have fought well but lost their battle to cancer, those who have battled cancer in the past, and to support those who are still fighting it. Candles are lit and set in each individual personal bag that has a special message, a picture, or a person’s name. A bagpiper will lead the lap around the track. Luminaries may be purchased on the spot for a $10 donation.

Cancer does not discriminate. It has no mercy. Relay for Life is one of the ways to even the score, to do something positive to fight this dreadful disease, and bring on the day when cancer is beaten for all. Victors, not victims!

For more info on how to donate or participate, please contact Christina Linn at (248) 663-3454 or e-mail christina.linn@cancer.org

FERNDALE PRIDE IS ONE OF Metro Detroit’s most famous and beloved events, and this year’s celebration is set to be especially dynamic. Recognizing the diverse LGBTQ+ community and their allies, Ferndale Pride aims to be an inclusive, friendly and electrifying event for everyone involved. Blending Ferndale residents, visitors, and various performers, Ferndale Pride will have something for everyone: captivating entertainers, eclectic vendors, and artists of all kinds are just some of the things to look forward to at this year’s celebration. The same weekend, attendees can participate in the fun, annual “Rainbow Run.” (The events are organized separately.)

Attendees can look forward to a street fair that brings together many different local flavors, with Pride on Saturday May 30 and the Rainbow Run Sunday June 1, from Noon to 9:00 P.M. the streets will be filled with performers representing a diverse group of tastes and talents. Stages will display continuous music lineups planned for entertainment and dancing. While the music plays, you can peruse the shopping areas. From local businesses to independent artists, exploring the vendor tables will be a great way to find gifts and other unique items not found anywhere else. A wide variety of food and drinks will also be served for everyone involved.
Ferndalepride.com will have a complete calendar-list of events prior to the lively weekend.

On Saturday morning, runners, walkers, and spectators alike can join in the fun of the Rainbow Run, a standout Pride event. Registered participants get a white T-shirt, and at different stations along the course, volunteers pelt the runners with colorful powder, so that at the end, you’re wearing a rainbow! All proceeds from the ‘Run will go to local nonprofit organizations, so you can make a difference while making a mess. The ‘Run is family-friendly and you can bring your littlest walkers / runners in strollers, but no dogs, please. Registration is still open for the 2K Fun Run or 5K Walk. There will be a kick-off balloon launch at 1:00 PM in honor of the late Kevin Rogers, followed by the awarding of charitable grants by the Ferndale Community Foundation.

Do you want to get involved with Ferndale Pride? Though the main Pride event takes place the last weekend of May, there will be a number of fundraising opportunities before then, in and around the city, where profits will go to supplementing the costs of putting on the weekend-long celebration. Currently, ‘Pride Planning Meetings’ are being held at Affirmations for anyone wanting to help with the organizing of the event. The dates for the meetings are April 21, May 6 and May 27.
Register to be part of the Rainbow Run at Rainbow-Run.com. Visit FerndalePride.com to see sponsorship and volunteer opportunities. Volunteering positions include greeters, information distributors, stagehands, and more. Sponsoring Pride weekend has a variety of benefits at many different levels. Weds. April 29 – Sat. May 2

IN A FEW SHORT WEEKS, the streets of Ferndale, Hamtramck and Detroit will once again be awash with music fans looking to quench their musical palettes, as Metro Times Blowout again infiltrates metro Detroit with its onslaught of musical acts and festive atmosphere.

Two years ago, Blowout branched out from its Hamtown roots to include Ferndale’s venues. Last year, Detroit was added. This year, the festival continues in all three cities, offering up a melting pot of genres – from electronic to hip-hop to garage rock – in a slightly paired-down and streamlined collection of venues. There are, of course, your traditional dive bars that are so near and dear to the heart and origin of the festival. One of the most exciting additions to this year’s roster, however, is Saint Andrews Hall, the location of the launch party. Additional new venues for 2015 include Hop Cat, the UFO Factory, PJ’s Lager House, Fowling Warehouse, Rock City Eatery, Grasshopper Underground, and Zeke’s BBQ.

Now entering its 18th year, the Metro Times Blowout has been providing metro Detroiters with up-and-coming musical acts for nearly two decades. What started as a Hamtramck music festival aimed at bringing a musical party to a town burgeoning with bars and bands has morphed and grown into one of the region’s top entertainment extravaganzas. Past musicians who have participated in Blowout over the years includes Eminem, the White Stripes, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.

Featuring 20 bars – ranging from enormous rockin’ venues to the tiniest dive bars – and over 200 musical acts, Blowout now boasts a handful of national talent in addition to the traditional local bands that the festival was built on. Native Michigander Andrew W.K. helps kick off the event on Wednesday, April 29. Add to the roster of national acts: The Black Lips, F*cked Up, Pup, Arkells, and indie-darlings Alvvays. Given the caliber of these artists, the festival has definitely grown to be one of the more substantial events in the Midwest. The brilliance of adding national headliners to the festival is that it helps build showcases and provide opportunities for up-and- coming bands to play in front of larger crowds and fellow musicians that they may not have previously had the chance to. More information – including lineups, participating venues, and how to buy tickets – is available at mtblowout.com

The best and brightest local individuals and businesses were honored at the Ferndale and Oak Park Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Awards and Recognition Gala on November 14. The Gala was held at the Twist Night Club, and presented by Gage Products Company of Ferndale and Paramount Precision Products of Oak Park.

The event lived up to its “gala” billing, with entertainers, strolling waitresses with appetizers, a silent auction featuring products and services donated by over 90 area businesses and individuals, and the opportunity to rub elbows with the smart, driven, and just plain friendly folks of the Ferndale and Oak Park business community. A bar overflowed with chips, salsa, and hummus donated by Garden Fresh Gourmet while a string quartet played softly in the glow of decorative lights.

“The Artist in You” was the theme of this year’s event. The CoC announced the Art Mural Project, in which the work of two sophomore, two junior, and two senior students from Ferndale High School will be chosen for outdoor display at various locations in Ferndale. Chosen students also have the opportunity to pick up scholarship money. Photos of young Ferndale High School artists were shown on TVs, and a selection of their work was available for viewing at the Gala.

The highlight of the evening, of course, was the awards ceremony. The winners of each category were:

  • Business Person of the Year: Dean Bach (Dino’s Lounge and M Brew).
  • New Business of the Year: Michigan Youth Arts (Marianne Dorais).
  • Special Service Award: Jack Aronson (Garden Fresh Gourmet).
  • Best of Ferndale: Tie between Rust Belt Market (Chris and Tiffany Best) and Ferndale Friends
  • Best of Oak Park: Tai Fai Restaurant (Bonnie Deng).
  • Volunteer of the Year: Rita Van Keymuelen (Creative Office Designs).

As a member of the Ferndale Friends team, I am, of course very excited about winning the “Best of Ferndale” award. It’s especially humbling when you consider the fine businesses and organizations we were up against.

BACK FOR ITS eighth year, the Ferndale GoodFellows dressed up and drank down in honor of the end to Prohibition.

Various Ferndale establishments tried to recreate the feel of the 1930s, hosting their own drink specials, while bar staffs and patrons were encouraged to wear period costumes (think Al Capone and The Great Gatsby). The event raised funds for Ferndale GoodFellows, who offer assistance to needy families during the holiday season. The event took place Saturday, December 6, starting around dinner time and running until the bars closed.

Lifelong Ferndale resident Larry Mills and his wife Monica are the brains behind the event. “Watching the History Channel, learning about December 1933, my husband suggested a fundraiser for Ferndale Goodfellows,” Monica said. “Any opportunity for Monica and Larry to get dressed up is cause for celebration in itself,” said Michael Hennes of Howe’s Bayou, which has been a participating venue in the event every year.

Donations are raised through sponsorships and passing the “moonshine jug” at participating venues. Last year, eight venues and more than a dozen volunteers raised over $3,500 for needy families. $22,500 has been raised over the event’s eight-year run. Volunteers stopped to pass the jug around all participating bars. Patrons were encouraged to put donations in the jug whenever they wanted to make a contribution. The moonshine jug will be left at Just 4 Us until after Christmas, so there’s still a chance to contribute.

“Off-duty police officers work with the fire department and other service organizations as part of Good Fellows to ensure each child is warm, sheltered, fed and hopefully has a toy for the holiday.”

Tito’s Vodka was a sponsor for the first time in 2014. “Ferndale is a big supporter of Tito’s and I thought that would be the least I could do,” said Sam Randazzo, state manager for Tito’s Vodka. “Everyone deserves a Merry Christmas.”

A history lesson.

PROTESTANTS AND PROGRESSIVES from both political parties, as part of the Anti-Saloon League, were the force behind Prohibition. After years of legal and political wrangling, the United States officially

became a dry country on January 17, 1920, when the 18th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution was passed.

Michigan had actually been trying to ban alcohol as early as 1852, believing that “such a ban would reduce crime and improve both family life and employee productivity,” according to documents from Wayne State’s Walter P. Reuther Library. Citizens of Michigan actually approved a prohibition amendment to the state constitution in 1916. However, “bootlegging operations and smuggling networks formed within hours.”

The Michigan-Windsor lake border was a match made in bootlegging heaven. One of Detroit’s most famous mobs, the Purple Gang, were notorious bootleggers.

When the Great Depression hit in the late 1920s and tax revenues waned, a new source of revenue was needed. The Cullen-Harrison Act legalized the sale of beer with an alcohol content of 3.2 percent. Upon signing the act, President Franklin D. Roosevelt reportedly said, “I think this would be a good time for a beer.”

The 18th Amendment was repealed on December 5, 1933, with ratification of the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. As of 2012, the state of Michigan has at least 120 breweries.

“We’re not actually honoring the end of Prohibition,” said Hennes. “More like celebrating the end of the silly law that banned drink in the first place.”

No more clichés, no more cynicism. Rock’s not dead. Never was. The Beggars are here to save the day. Rock’s redeemers, Steven Tuthill, Jim Faulkner, Pookie Grech and Chris Krez, each understand that rock n’ roll can be more than just music, it can be something to live for…

And don’t you dare doubt their powers. Attendees of Beggars concerts are often quickly converted by their charms: a combination of the wild and the raucous with the wholesome and the nostalgic; it’s head-banging, fist-pumping, guitar-shredding, ballad-belting music, but it’s done with this charismatic grin and studded with a classy (if half-crazed) showmanship that conjures the most glorious of rock’s glory days.

Last month, the Ferndale quartet released their second full-length record, a self-titled album produced by a powerhouse team, Eddie Spaghetti (of Arizona garage rock legends The Supersuckers,) Andy Patalan (guitarist of Detroit-bred alt-rock group Sponge) and local producer Tony Maisano.

The album is their most definitive work to date, with the versatile Faulkner’s driving backbeats, the dynamics of Krez’s cascading riffs, and Grech’s subtle coiling bass licks. It’s a rock that has a lot of heart and gets a floor shaking, rattles windows and brings bodies to move, dance or jump, spurred on by Tuthill’s trilling baritone lead vocal.

“Genuine rock and roll,” Tuthill calls it; “…the Good-Time Rock.”

That means drums that get you moving, blurring guitars bellowing those electric growls and bass that sweetens with a soulful crest. Tuthill, meanwhile, a former football player and wrestler, is keen to throw his whole body into his performance and that’s key to the infectious energy of the Beggars, assuming a larger-than-life presence on stage, ready to back flip off of turnbuckles, if they could. When rock n’ roll can seem heroic, like its participants, the performers on the stage evidently appreciate that certain kind of caution-to- the-wind sacredness that rock deserves. That’s when you know you’re at a Beggars show.

“We’re normal guys, most of the time,” Tuthill says, as he digs a Frisbee out of the bed of his truck. “But, when you get on that stage,” he stops to set his coffee down at the foot of an oak tree, “then it’s no time to be normal. At that point it’s like…” he tosses the Frisbee over to me, “…like you’re from a different planet, ya’ know?”

He nods, his long curled hair blown back by the late autumn breeze. “Not a better planet! Just…a different planet. It is a lot of fun.”

Tuthill meets me on the last beautiful day of the season, strolling through Geary Park in Ferndale on a weekday morning. “I couldn’t find my football,” he admits. “That’s like a low point, for me. I have to use my Frisbee…”

The Beggars have been a Ferndale band for a long time now. Tuthill’s second show with the band was performed at Club Bart’s (where John D now operates.) “I always love bringing up Club Bart’s cuz I have such fond memories of that bar, so many great shows, particularly with Duende.”

Indeed, Tuthill, and the entire Beggars alumni go way back… The band was started in the early 00’s by Jonny Wilkins, Jim Hansard, Joe Senac, Jon Epstein and Keith Thompson. That’s right, the current line-up of the Beggars technically has no original members. To his credit, though, Tuthill, the longest-serving Beggar, joined the band ten years ago. The album’s liner notes give respectful shout-outs to all former members, including Johnny Miller, Jim Hansard, Jeremy Cybulski and Rod “Pool Party” Jones.

“Awesome dudes all across the board,” says Tuthill with his characteristically easygoing exuberance. “And everyone still gets along great. All classy dudes, from start to finish Everybody’s still a family, it’s good. And that’s rare (for bands).” I can see a glint of contented nostalgia in his eyes as he pauses, “Man,” he says, “it’s been nuts, all of the great venues we’ve played at through the years. The Majestic, The Magic Stick, The Magic Bag…aWoodwardDreamCruisePartybackin2002, aHomecomingDanceorona Pontoon boat, or the Pig & Whiskey and DIY…”

“We plan to rock from here to eternity,” Tuthill assures us.

Are you ready for your chance to play a super- hero in real life? Want to make the world around you a better place? Then grab your friends and sign up to participate in Ferndale’s Relay for Life at Ferndale High School June 14th and 15th.

Returning to Ferndale for the seventh consecutive year, Ferndale’s Relay for Life is a 24-hour event which brings together people from all over the Ferndale area and beyond to help raise money and awareness for the fight against cancer — one of the most affecting diseases throughout the world.

Though specific details of the Relay are still yet to be announced, participants can look forward to an incredible day of entertainment and emotion. The event begins on June 14th with the Opening Ceremony which serves as the perfect high-energy start to the awesome weekend-long event.

The first lap of the Relay is the Survivors Lap, where cancer survivors are invited to take a celebratory lap around the track in honor of their victory over cancer.

The emotional center of the event comes that evening with the Luminaria Ceremony — an extremely moving portion of the Relay where small luminaria bags containing candles are placed around the track at dusk illuminating the area in memory of those who are still fighting their battle with cancer or who’ve sadly passed away from the horrible disease. The event con- cludes with a Fight Back and Closing Ceremony both dedicated to highlighting and celebrating the commitment all participants and volunteers have made to work to fight back against cancer during the coming year.

This year’s Relay for Life promises to be a “super” event, with a superhero theme taking over the entire weekend.

Volunteers and participants are encouraged to dress up and identify with their favorite superheroes to help create a fun atmosphere. Whether you’re a spectator, Relay participant, or you make a pledge to help support the effort, the weekend event promises lots of laughs, plenty of contests, great entertainment, and memories that will last a lifetime – all for a great cause.

After the half-mile parade on Nine Mile, you can enjoy crafts and other kid-friendly activities, learn about healthy lifestyles throughout the day, enjoy free food, even get a free bike tune-up. Ferndale businesses sponsoring the event include Garden Fresh Gourmet, Western Market, Downtown Ferndale Bike Shop, The Woodward Avenue Brewers, Como’s, Dino’s, Credit Union One, Imperial, and New York Bagel — but that’s only about half the total sponsors. Detroit businesses like Shinola and local restaurants like Royal Oak’s Inn Season are also generously helping.

There’s always a Green Cruiser of the Year, chosen in different ways over the years the event has taken place. 2013’s Cruiser was Matthew Faraday, bike commuter to Beaumont who “spear-headed a mapping project that led to a cycling route map of South East Oakland County that the hospital printed and distributed,” according to the Green Cruise website.

Have to drive to get to the event? Find out where to park, as well as see a photo gallery, full list of sponsors, and other information on the official webpage. Just google “Green Cruise.” Top hit, as part of the Michigan Chapter of the Sierra Club’s website.
