Q: Can you get off probation early? My spouse is on probation for a year. He was convicted of domestic vio- lence (third offense) and ordered to go to three AA meetings a week and take a prevention class. We also have a no con- tact order in place. Can we get this reversed, or change the no contact order?

A: Yes. The sentencing judge has the authority to release a person from probation early. They also have the au- thority to revoke probation and put your husband in jail, or to make the probation longer. Extending probation is a common punishment for a minor violation, but a probationer can be jailed for contempt of court for any violation of the order or probation.

The chance of actually having probation ended before scheduled, however, is remote. Since this is a third offense, the court will want to be convinced that there is a strong reason to end probation early. Your question does not include any reason why early release would be warranted or how long the probation has lasted so far.

A “no contact” order is common in domestic violence cases. It forbids anyone from contacting your husband on your behalf, or vice versa. Of course, the order is an order of the court, and not an order from you or from your husband. Neither of you can change it. You must ask the court to do that.

Most courts rely a lot on their probation officers. If your probation officer recommends lifting the no-contact order, it is more likely the judge will do so. Even that probation officer, however, would be required to provide reasons. Since this is the third time the courts have been involved in your relationship, the passage of time alone may not be enough. The court will want some assurance that the pattern of misbehavior will stop.

Probation is considered a “break.” When a person is on probation, they could have been sentenced to jail. The court is giving them the opportunity to remain in the community and to demonstrate that they should not be punished with jail time. When you break your break by violating a term of probation, there is a good chance you will be found in con- tempt of court and jailed.

In cases involving alcohol, drugs, or other addictions, there are added problems. It is common for an addict to be involved in a relationship with a person who is a “co-alcoholic” or “co-addict.” Such an individual is always on the side of the addict, blames other people or circumstances for the problems and wants to bail out the addict or otherwise “save” the alcoholic from the consequences of their choice to drink. For these reasons, simply wanting a no-contact order lifted is not enough.

At the beginning of his famous comedy piece, Sataland Diaries, David Sedaris recalls how he first came to New York, expecting to step right off the bus and into a gig writing for soap operas. He didn’t, of course, and ended up working as an elf in Macy’s Christmas display.

It turns out Sedaris was doing it work. Jill Lorie Hurst, a Ferndale resident for the past year (and writer for Ferndale Friends) did have a gig writing soap operas, achieving the rank of co-head writer for Guiding Light. But she didn’t just step off a bus and into soap stardom…she did it the hard way.

“I grew up watching them.” Jill recalls. “My mother was a fan, and girls tend to follow their mothers.”

Originally from the east side of Detroit, she studied theater at Wayne State, then moved to New York City. Once there, she worked as a waitress for ten years, living day-to-day. Jill describes a carefree life of walking to work, then afterwards walking over to see plays on Broadway.

One day, one of her regular customers asked if she wanted to have a tour of the studio where her husband worked, filming commercials. Jill was nonplussed until her customer mentioned that the studio was also where they filmed Guiding Light.

“My eyes lit up then!” Jill says. On her tour, she met some actors and came away with a great impression. Later, she accepted a part-time receptionist job at the studio. “I was still waitressing, breakfast and lunch, then answering phones at the studio in the late afternoon.” Eventually, there was an opening for writer’s assistant. She did that for five years. Then, things started to snowball.

“It was a series of very supportive people, gently pushing me to the next step.” She recalls. She started writing scripts with a partner. From there, she became a script editor, then a breakdown writer. She learned on the job, bootstrapping from one task to the next. She spent a year as a producer. At last, one day she found herself as co-head writer of Guiding Light.

“Nothing magical.” Jill says. “I just showed up. I loved being there.”

Unfortunately, she couldn’t spend too long at the pinnacle. Guiding Light was canceled in 2009 after a 57-year run on television. Her co-creators hit the ground writing, working for other soaps, but Jill was exhausted. “We’d been working seven days a week, for forever.” Jill wanted a break. She jumped into other projects, gathering old colleagues and actors from the show to work on pitching new properties, and…

“We failed miserably.” She laughs. Jill found other work, including a gig working for Ricky Lauren, wife of Ralph, for three years. But all things change, and real life sometimes intrudes. Four years after Guiding Light ended, she and her husband (who she’d met at the studio) had hit the wall financially. “We left NYC because we were broke and I wasn’t quite sure what the next step should be.” Jill says.

So how did they decide on Ferndale? “We didn’t! It found us. When my mom’s best friends offered us one of their Ferndale rentals that had just been vacated, we grabbed it.”

Asked what aspected of Ferndale attract her the most, Jill says, “First of all, it’s walkable. I don’t drive, and it has such direct access to Detroit. We have old friends who live right down the street on Woodward. We love the restaurants, the fact that there are two bookstores, the piped-in music downtown, the front porches, the wind chimes, and the terrific people we’ve met, most of whom seem proud and happy to live here. I love that!”

How does she feel about Ferndale’s future with so much happening inside the city? “I hope it continues to be a town that values small business and diversity. I hope it holds onto its community of artists and tradespeople. Ferndale reminds me of working on Guiding Light; it’s character driven, collaborative, and all about community.”

A QUESTION I AM ASKED most often is, “What do you seniors do?” Aside from our trips, and occasional special meetings, most people have no idea of who we are, and what we really do. You all think of us as a group of old people who appear to be slightly out of touch with the real world. You see us out at restaurants, or at an event, and you chat politely, as you would do with your grandmother or favorite aunt, and that is it. We are a group to you, not individuals. In some portion of your mind, we play bingo, compare illnesses, and sell cook- ies. Yeah, right!

We may get on our short bus as a group, but look closer, and really see us as we tour Ikea. See how Valerie and Betsy tour the store, chatting, looking at everything, and buying little, just happy to be out with friends. Jean Russell is seri- ous, she came with a mental list, and is sticking to it.

We attend every special exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Joyce Littlejohn and I can be counted on to take the longest, reading each explanation, and carefully gazing at all the images. Nancy Johns can be counted to hit the gift store first, never leaving empty-handed. Then, we all do lunch in the cafeteria.

Most summers we do the Riverwalk, strolling by the water and chatting. Even our bus driver, Greg, gets in on this, lead- ing the pack. Virginia and Joyce and I are second, with Sheila and Peggy not far behind. A few of the others sit on the benches and enjoy the sunshine.

Our meetings are either informative or entertaining. We have speakers like Garry Taylor from the Ferndale Historic Muse- um, who is coming on Wednesday, April 22 to talk about an interesting aspect of Ferndale’s history. At other times, we are just silly and have fun. On Wednesday, April 8, we will have an Easter egg hunt! I know, it’s after Easter, but, who cares? We are going to hide plastic eggs containing gift certificates, lottery tickets, and candy, and then let the members search. I love watching the ladies spread out and hunt. Even the quiet ones like Joyce Williams and Eva join in and find a prize.

In June, we will go to the Frida Kahlo exhibit at the DIA.

To further enhance this experience, we are hosting a docent from the DIA at the May 27 meeting to show slides and speak about Frida and Diego Rivera and their year in Detroit.

Virginia has a particular love of dive bar hamburgers, and she has arranged a tour of Ferndale’s shot and a beer bars, complete with burgers.

In the summer, one of our meetings is a pot luck barbeque, with everyone bringing a dish. I always bring my butter- milk pie, Joyce brings her spaghetti salad, Katie swoops in with her famous baked beans. At Thanksgiving time, we do another pot luck, with the turkey catered, and we bring all the fixings, potatoes, salads, and desserts.

Joyce Bannon helps knitters and crochet people on Tuesdays, as well as helping in the kitchen. She brings us food when we are sick, and is a perfect moth- er hen.

So, I hope I have helped you see us in a somewhat different light, and I hope you will join us for future trips and events. You don’t have to be a senior to drop in for our meetings, and go on some of our trips. That said, you only have to be 55 years old to join us, and I am sure a lot of you are at least that old.

Our meetings are the second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 11:00 A.M. at the Kulick Center.

Last month the Ferndale Schools Board of Education approved a plan to move our district into the future. This process started back in 2012 with the strategic planning process that identified a need to restructure the school district. The plan approved by the Board last month is the product of a comprehensive analysis of our buildings, an extensive engagement to determine the needs of the community, and a review of the most efficient and effective use of the School District’s resources.

This is an exciting time to be an Eagle! The positive changes coming to the district will allow Ferndale Schools to continue our tradition of the Open Class- room Program while introducing the rigorous Cambridge International curric- ulum at our elementary schools. This means that every child in our district will now have the opportunity to benefit from the Open Classroom philosophy combin- ed with a renowned international curriculum.

The plan approved by the school board is split into two phases, the first taking place at start of next school year (2015- 2016), and the second slated to be implemented in the 2016-2017 school year. Changes to be made in the 2015- 2016 school year include consolidating the Ferndale Schools Administrative offices from the Warren G. Harding Building to Ferndale High School. All district preschool programs will be moved to Harding, creating a single preschool building for all of Ferndale Schools’ outstanding early childhood education programs.

The Thomas Jefferson Center, which currently houses the Adult Education Program and the Digital Learning Center (Ferndale’s Alternative high school,) will be closed at the end of the current school year, and the two programs will move to a leased space starting next year. The William Taft Building, which most recently housed the DLC earlier this school year, will also be closed permanently over the summer.

Starting in the 2016-2017 school year, Ferndale Schools will begin the reinven- tion of its current elementary school model. This will result in a single unified elementary school utilizing Open Class- room principles and the rigorous and pioneering Cambridge International curriculum. This preserves strong parent volunteerism, student-directed learning, project-based education, outdoor educa- tion, focused learning, student-peer mentoring, and similar principles of the Open Classroom.

What else are we gaining in our elementary schools with this new school model?

– Return of Spanish K-5
– More opportunities for advanced coursework
– Individualized focus studies
– Service learning
– Individual computers or tablets available for students (grades 3-5)
– Systematic interventions to help all students when they struggle.

When your friends ask you what is so special about a Ferndale Elementary education, you can tell them that it is a globally-focused curriculum with a local heart.

The new elementary school will utilize two buildings which will house a lower elementary and an upper elementary campus. The lower elementary campus will be housed at the current Theodore Roosevelt Primary School and will be for students in kindergarten through second grade. The upper elementary campus will be located at the current John F. Kennedy Elementary School and will be for students in third through fifth grade.

Also as part of this phase, sixth grade students will be moved to Ferndale Middle School starting in the 2016-2017 school year. This move allows for our sixth graders to have access to the new Cambridge International Honors Program a year early. It also opens the door to the incredible world of opportunities that exist at Ferndale Middle School. Sixth-graders will now have more programmatic offer- ings than ever before, from expanded arts, athletics, and clubs to access to our new programs like Cambridge Interna- tional Honors, a Project Lead the Way STEM class, and our new Shark Tank business class.

The final piece of the 2016-2017 phase will be the movement of University High School from its current location at the Woodrow Wilson building to its new home at the Calvin Coolidge building. The Wilson building would then join Jefferson and Taft as buildings that would be closed permanently within the next two years. The proceeds from the sale of these properties will go directly back into the school district. This will allow us to purchase additional technol- ogy, renovate existing spaces, and pursue other possibilities to further education.

Starting in April we will begin holding monthly meetings with the community to update them on the progress that is being made on the transition. These meetings will be at the Ferndale High School Media Center on April 22 and May 26, with sessions at 9:00 A.M. and 7:00 P.M. I hope to see you all there!

Funny how many people think the library got left back behind in the 20th Century. Not only can you download an eBook from home with your library card, but you can check out MP3 files of audiobooks onto an iPod or smartphone. Forget loaning and late fees; Ferndale Area District Library is evolving into more of a community center, hosting book clubs, live rock concerts, and even archery lessons.

“I love the library’s Book Party,” said Kricket Hoekstra of the popular reading club that partners with the Emory restaurant. “It’s so much more relaxed than a book club.” The Book Party is a bi-monthly club that reads cutting edge contemporary fiction, with readers holding court in a bar setting, dishing on appetizers as they scrutinize the twist endings. “Sure, we discuss awesome books, but it’s also an opportunity to make new friends with people who enjoy reading in general,“ Hoekstra added.

“I’ve met some lovely, interesting, diverse and thoughtful members of the community through (FADL Book Parties),” said local patron Christina Rogers. “I usually have at least one book, eBook, movie or CD checked out from FADL because they constantly have new releases or staff recommendations that I end up loving.”

EBook Popularity Rising: Ferndale Library is essentially your download destination; in fact, the staff like to think of the library not as a building of books, but as an “access hub” for everyone in need of a digital connection, be that to the Inter- net via the computer labs and free wi-fi or streaming video documentaries.

Ferndale Library staff recorded an 80% increase in eBook checkouts by their patrons over the last five years along with nearly 70,000 virtual visits to the online catalog. With the Overdrive Media app, it’s like Netflix for books. Patrons use their library cards to digitally check-out eBooks and Audiobooks (i.e., downloading them), storing them on their personal devices for up to 3 weeks.

The Social Library: FADL has also established an outstanding social media presence (on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest and with its own blog, The FADL Observer), averaging 400 engagements per day and tweeting to nearly 1,200 followers, while also building relation- ships through supporting, liking, re-tweet- ing and linking to other organizations, institutions and community members. #LocalLibraryLove

And Then There’s The Rock Concerts: In Ferndale, “Libraries Rock!” isn’t just another cute bookwormy rallying call, it’s made manifest through loud amps, full drum kits and lighting rigs!

START HERE: Saturday is just one face that “shows how much ‘hipper’ and cooler the Ferndale Library is,” said Dan McKernan of Desolation Angels, who recently performed at FADL. “One great thing was the atmosphere; our band loves to play in loud, rocking clubs and bars as much as anyone, but it was a special kind of cool to play in such a different environment, where people could actually hear the notes we played and words that we were singing.”

Celebrate National Library Week 2015 (April 12-18, 2015): A time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and its librarians. Consider promoting the unlimited possibilities accessible within these walls, on every shelf and through our computer labs. Who says it should only be one week, though?

Ingenuity, according to the dictionary, is defined as “the quality of being clever, original, and inventive.” Its synonyms are imaginative, genius, talent, skill, mastery, artistry, and innovation. All of these qualities, and their presence in our city, are the reasons behind the creation of the annual event known as the DIY (Do It Yourself) Fest.

The DIY fest was started back in 2008 by Chris Johnston and his now-wife, Krista Johnston. When
the economy wasn’t doing too well, and job availability was at low ebb, some families were left without employment and were wondering how long the down economy would last. It all came down to choices. Do I wait until things get better? Or do I go and find a part-time or temporary job through a temp agency just to make ends meet? There is an old saying, still relevant to today’s society, that goes “when life gives you lemons, just make lemonade” and that’s what many people had to do (and did) in the city of Ferndale. People were forced to become entrepreneurs and rely on whatever skills that they had to make a living for themselves.

The DIY Fest was conceived just to aid that do-it-yourself spirit. It’s a celebration of creativity giving people an avenue to rise from the worries that life may bring to live a fulfilling life. Vendors from all over come together to show their skills and sell their wares. DIY Fest features handmade t-shirts, home goods, toys, hygiene products, art, crafts, jewelry, music, and some of the best homemade cooking and beer you could ever find, in Michigan or anywhere else.

The DIY is a great outlet to help local artists make names for themselves, as well as showing everyone what the city of Ferndale has to offer as a community. You wouldn’t believe that your neighbor from around the corner was so crafty until you see them at the DIY fest.

This festival is an absolutely free event that will be held September 25 to 27, 2015 at and around the intersection of Woodward and Nine Mile in the downtown area. Kid zones, free Ferris wheel rides, awesome food and live entertainment, and of course the artisans and their wares, are ready for you to experience down at the festival. DIY Fest will not only let you rub elbows with some of the most creative beings who live in your area, but it just might also inspire you to take a leap of faith.

Maybe you, too, will be challenged to dig deep inside and unleash those ideas that have been brewing within. Maybe you’ll gain the courage to also take the initiative to DO IT YOURSELF.

ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 8, WALKERS, cyclists and folks who want to celebrate the planet Earth will come together on Nine Mile in Ferndale for the 11th annual Green Cruise.

From the Sierra Club website: “Join us in celebrating the many forms of human-powered transit that keep you and the earth healthy.”

I’m in. I love the fact that Ferndale is a walkable town, and that people bike, even in the dead of winter. Walking and cycling around town in August? Wonderful…

This is Jerry Haspenger’s first year as Green Cruise Chairman. He started with the group several years ago, organizing the various bike rides. “I got a good bike and found someone to help me with the routes.” There are several rides. The 40 mile and the 22 mile rides require registration and an entry fee. Ten dollars if you register ahead of time, fifteen dollars the day of the event. Everything else, including the family ride and the walks, is free. Low-key music is a part of the day, including a flamenco guitarist. Sponsored by the Sierra Club, vendors from “for profit” and “non- profit” organizations participate.

The goal of the Green Cruise is to explore (through bicycling), enjoy (have a great, fun day) and protect the planet. Vendors give out educational, environmentally-friendly information.

Jerry told me that The Green Cruise was created by Shirley Bavonese, who now lives in Ann Arbor. She gathered together a few neighbors and started the event as an alternative to the Dream Cruise. What started as a few neighbors biking has grown every year. In 2014 there were 220 cyclists. There is an award given to “Green Cruiser of the Year,” someone who is not only devoted to being a bicyclist, but also promotes cycling.

Jerry shared news that will hopefully bring out a whole new group of walkers. This year there will be a dog walk as part of the Green Cruise. Dogs and their people can do a one or a two mile walk. Lucy (my dog) and I will meet you on Nine Mile and Woodward at 11:00 A.M.

The Cruise Committee needs volunteers to help set up the morning of August 8. Many things go into planning these events. I peeked at Jerry’s carefully organized list and was overwhelmed by the details that need to be checked off so that we can enjoy a fun, relaxing day, learn something we can incorporate into making our daily lives healthier, and become more mindful of our part in the earth’s future.

“It’s important to be good stewards of the Earth,” says Jerry with calm conviction.

WHEN DO WE ROLL? The third Saturday in August, which this year means August 15. But Ferndale’s party actually starts on August 13 and ends with the amazing Saturday Cruise that starts in Ferndale and travels through nine host cities up Woodward. No fee to drive in the Cruise! No fee to watch! Ferndale’s events include the Emergency Vehicle Show, The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony / Lights & Sirens Cruise, the sexy Mustang Alley and finally, the Cruise itself.

The Woodward Dream Cruise was born in Ferndale in 1995 to raise funds to build a local soccer field. Over the years it has become the world’s most popular one-day automotive event. Michael Lary, Ferndale’s Events Director, sat with me to chat about the evolution of the Cruise. When he signed on in 2005, he was determined to get the focus back to Ferndale, where the Dream Cruise started. “Ferndale is a great host town. People are very welcoming, and the residents (for the most part) really enjoy all of the special events.” People travel in from all over the world to attend the Cruise and all of the events that have become a part of the annual tradition.

The live soundtrack of classic rock played by local talent accompanies the cars as they roll through Ferndale. The decision to make music an important part of the celebration elevated the Dream Cruise to a new level. Lary says they book “really wonderful bands” every year, some that perform on the Rockin’ Live Entertainment Stage annually, some new.

The planning team is mindful of the fact that it is important for local restaurants and businesses to benefit from the influx of car and music lovers, so they are careful about how many outside vendors participate, but they try to make sure there is something for everyone!

When the Ford Foundation stepped in to fund Mustang Alley, that event grew. Generations of Mustang owners come out with their prized cars. You’ll now see about 1,000 Mustangs in the event. Lary admits to an affection for the Mustang’s personality. “It’s like they’re growling at you when you look at them.” The Emergency Vehicle Show is a favorite of the kids, who love going up in the fire engine lifts.

Is the Dream Cruise a huge planning nightmare? No. Lary’s been working with the same team since he took on the job. “We know what the Dream Cruise is supposed to be and we don’t try to reinvent the wheel,” he smiles. His only worry is Mother Nature. “She will do what she wants.”

“The Woodward Dream Cruise is about community, cars and music… three things that the Detroit area is known for.” We talked about the people, both participants and onlookers. “You ask someone a question, and they share a memory about their car, or the song that’s playing, or both”.
