Saturday, June 13

It’s April, the weather is warming, spring has finally arrived, and people all over Ferndale are tackling that dreaded chore: Cleaning the garage, basement, or attic. Where did all this stuff come from, and how do I get rid of it easily?

We all have extra stuff. Here is a solution which will help you and your city as well. Pack everything up, call the Ferndale Department of Recreation, and arrive at Ferndale City Hall a little before 9:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 13.

The Trunk & Treasure Sale is definitely your answer. The price is $15 for a parking space- size area for you to sell your goods. Once you have unpacked and set up, you are free to wander and gawk at what the other 39 vendors are offering. As you stroll, you will find garden stuff, plants, books, jewelry, furniture, electronics, crafts, and more.

Under the overhang of City Hall is senior territory! The Ferndale Seniors have been gathering, sorting, and pricing donated items. Their goal every year is to sell everything, so their prices start very low, and as the day wears on, they get downright silly.

At the library end of the parking lot, Ed Burns rules the library book sale, with thousands of books at bargain basement prices. He has everything from pretty coffee table books, to novels by popular authors, to nonfiction.

The Ferncare Garage Sale is just down the street in their parking lot across from the Credit Union. They always have a unique assortment of goodies at reasonable prices, and proceeds go to supporting their clinic.

Is all this making you hungry? Dino’s has their food truck set up, and is permeating the air with the savory smell of barbeque. Still hungry for something sweet? Whenever there are seniors around, there is a bake sale! Our darling little ladies have been baking and concocting for a few days, and the results with certainly entice you.

While we are considering the seniors, their white elephant sale is entirely from donations, and the funds go to further their programs. If you don’t have enough stuff to rent a parking space, consider calling me, and donating it to the seniors for their sale.

So, you can get rid of your old stuff, get some new stuff (after all, you now have room for it), stroll, meet your neighbors, be out in the sunshine, and have a delightful lunch. Not a bad deal!

Call Ferndale Recreation at 248-544-6767. They can help you secure your spot.

Want to donate to the Senior Sale? Call Jeannie Davis at 248-541-5888.

In its 53rd year, the 2015 Michigan Youth Arts Festival (MYAF) is a multidisciplinary arts spectacular, highlighting the achievements of the state’s best performing and fine artists at the high school level. The event will take place May 7 to 9 on the campus of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. All musical concerts, theater performances, visual art exhibits, and film screenings will be free of charge and open to the public.

“The Michigan Youth Arts Festival honors the best artistic talent in the state, at both the student and professional level,” said Marianne Dorais, Executive Director of Michigan Youth Arts. “Arts education leads to increased creativity, higher graduation rates, and greater aspirations, and Michigan Youth Arts is proud to play a role in the artistic development of these young people.”

To be invited to MYAF as a participant, Michigan high school students must earn the highest scores throughout yearlong adjudications, coordinated by Michigan Youth Arts’ statewide partner associations. The top 1,000 students, who are carefully chosen from a pool of more than 250,000 applicants, are then invited to the Festival, where they showcase their work and attend discipline-specific master classes led by renowned industry professionals. Additionally, the Festival’s Friday night Gala Concert will be accompanied by the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony.

“Michigan Youth Arts is honored to host this annual event because it not only encourages artistic excellence at the high school level, but also creates an awareness of the importance of art in the lives of Michigan residents,” said Dorais. “The extraordinary talent of our Distinguished Scholars, whether as vocalists, actors, dancers, musicians or artists, is something of which the entire state can be proud.”

There’s no better childhood memory than riding your bike around the neighborhood with friends after school. The summer breeze that flows across your face while riding a bike is like no other. For more than seven years the Ferndale Recreation Department, Rotary Club, Police and Fire Department has been helping the community get ready for bike season, and 2015 is no different. Ferndale’s Annual Bike Rodeo will take place on Saturday, June 6 from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. at Ferndale High School. It’s designed for children to come and learn about the safety, and fun, of riding a bike.

“In the past several years we have put this event on in conjunction with our youth day softball opening day.” says Jill Manchik, recreation director. An opening day ceremony at the high school has been planned on June 6 as well.

The Bike Rodeo will have its usual activities including: a free bike skills test provided by the police department; free bike inspection provided by Downtown Ferndale Bikes; free bike helmets (kids must bring bike for free helmet) provided by the Rotary Club; free bike license (for Ferndale residents only), and a free fire safety house tour, pending the fire department’s availability.

This year the Recreation Department welcomes sponsors that want to give away food and drink to attendants (sponsors are not permitted to sell products).

For more information about Bike Rodeo visit www.ferndalemi.gov or contact Jill Manchik at jmanchik@ferndalemi.gov.

Drayton Avenue Co-op Preschool (DACP) invites the local community to attend its 23rd Annual Silent Auction, themed “Get Greek, a Toga Party!” This adult-only event, our biggest fundraiser of the year, will be held on Friday, April 24 from 6:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. at Drayton Avenue Presbyterian Church at 2441 Pinecrest in Ferndale

Advance tickets are $10 per person and available by calling (586) 260-7218, or they can be purchased at the door on the night of the event for $15 per person. Guests will enjoy live performances from local musicians, as well as appetizers and adult beverages donated by local restaurants.

Bidding on Silent Auction items will begin at 6:00 P.M. with staggered ending times. Local businesses and artists, Michigan businesses, as well as international names, including Walt Disney World, The Henry Ford, and Trader Joe’s are some of the donors providing a wide variety of goods to bid on.

Fundraising and donations help keep tuition low for DACP’s unique, high-quality educational program. Drayton Avenue Co-op Preschool was established in 1949 as a non-profit, play-based cooperative preschool for children ages 2 to 4. It is a non-denominational organization that welcomes children of any race, sex, creed or national origin.

As DACP relies on parents and caregivers to volunteer in the classroom alongside the teacher, it is a tight-knit community where lifelong friendships are forged between families. With a strong tradition that spans more than 60 years, the continued success of DACP depends on community support, as well as new families joining the program.

For more information about DACP’s 23rd Annual Silent Auction, contact co-chair Kim Hart at (586) 260-7218 or kimi.hart@hotmail.com. Details about the event and auction items can also be found on the Drayton Avenue Co-op Preschool facebook page or at www.draytonpreschool.org.

Saturday, June 13

It all started in 1985 on an athletic track in Tacoma, Washington. Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran around the track for 24 hours, raising $27,000 for the American Cancer society. A year later, supporters joined him and the event began to grow. Today, Relay for Life events are held in hundreds of cities around the world. Throughout its history, Relay for Life has raised awareness of cancer, given people a way to connect with fellow patients, survivors, caregivers, and supporters, and raised $5 billion for cancer research. Today, organized by the American Cancer Society, companies and individuals form teams and raise money, the goal being to have someone from their team running or walking the track for the duration of the event.

I spoke to Michele Sibula and Christina Linn of the ACS about this year’s event. The first thing to know is that this year’s relay is at a new location, Martin Road Park, located at 1615 East Lewiston Avenue. “More public access, new neighborhoods.” Christina smiles. Event leadership teams can customize Relays to fit a particular city, and Ferndale’s promises to be fun and unique.

Ferndale’s Relay will run for 14 hours, from 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 13 until the stroke of midnight to welcome in Sunday, June 14. Registration opens at 10:00 A.M. Opening ceremonies begin at 11:00 A.M. with a survivor speaker, music from the choir and the presentation of the colors. As the race begins, the first lap goes to the survivors, celebrating another year of having beaten cancer, while those who have been by their side cheer them on along the sidelines. Then the caregivers take their turn, then the teams take the track. But there’s much more to do than just walking or running around. There will also be a “kids zone,” with activities for the whole family, including bounce houses, games, and entertainment.

In the afternoon, there will be a “fight back” ceremony, inspiring people to take action and make a commitment to fight cancer for themselves, for their loved ones, and for the community. You can make a pledge, for example, to eat healthier, or make a donation, or to remind family members to get screened. There will be speakers with inspirational stories of survival as well.

You can also learn more about ACS CAN, the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network, the lobbying and legislative arm of the ACS. ACS CAN has scored numerous victories for public health, including banning smoking in public facilities.
There will be a silent auction as well, with proceeds supporting the ACS and its work. Individuals or companies interested in donating items for the auction may contact Christina at the email address below.

As dusk comes on, the always-moving Luminaria Ceremony begins. In it, we take the time to remember the people who have fought well but lost their battle to cancer, those who have battled cancer in the past, and to support those who are still fighting it. Candles are lit and set in each individual personal bag that has a special message, a picture, or a person’s name. A bagpiper will lead the lap around the track. Luminaries may be purchased on the spot for a $10 donation.

Cancer does not discriminate. It has no mercy. Relay for Life is one of the ways to even the score, to do something positive to fight this dreadful disease, and bring on the day when cancer is beaten for all. Victors, not victims!

For more info on how to donate or participate, please contact Christina Linn at (248) 663-3454 or e-mail christina.linn@cancer.org

Weds. April 29 – Sat. May 2

IN A FEW SHORT WEEKS, the streets of Ferndale, Hamtramck and Detroit will once again be awash with music fans looking to quench their musical palettes, as Metro Times Blowout again infiltrates metro Detroit with its onslaught of musical acts and festive atmosphere.

Two years ago, Blowout branched out from its Hamtown roots to include Ferndale’s venues. Last year, Detroit was added. This year, the festival continues in all three cities, offering up a melting pot of genres – from electronic to hip-hop to garage rock – in a slightly paired-down and streamlined collection of venues. There are, of course, your traditional dive bars that are so near and dear to the heart and origin of the festival. One of the most exciting additions to this year’s roster, however, is Saint Andrews Hall, the location of the launch party. Additional new venues for 2015 include Hop Cat, the UFO Factory, PJ’s Lager House, Fowling Warehouse, Rock City Eatery, Grasshopper Underground, and Zeke’s BBQ.

Now entering its 18th year, the Metro Times Blowout has been providing metro Detroiters with up-and-coming musical acts for nearly two decades. What started as a Hamtramck music festival aimed at bringing a musical party to a town burgeoning with bars and bands has morphed and grown into one of the region’s top entertainment extravaganzas. Past musicians who have participated in Blowout over the years includes Eminem, the White Stripes, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.

Featuring 20 bars – ranging from enormous rockin’ venues to the tiniest dive bars – and over 200 musical acts, Blowout now boasts a handful of national talent in addition to the traditional local bands that the festival was built on. Native Michigander Andrew W.K. helps kick off the event on Wednesday, April 29. Add to the roster of national acts: The Black Lips, F*cked Up, Pup, Arkells, and indie-darlings Alvvays. Given the caliber of these artists, the festival has definitely grown to be one of the more substantial events in the Midwest. The brilliance of adding national headliners to the festival is that it helps build showcases and provide opportunities for up-and- coming bands to play in front of larger crowds and fellow musicians that they may not have previously had the chance to. More information – including lineups, participating venues, and how to buy tickets – is available at mtblowout.com

Story by Allison Martin and Scott MacDonald

If you live or work the Ferndale area, chances are you are familiar with the 8 Mile and Woodward intersection, and chances are you are familiar with the cast of characters that live on those corners. Before you go passing judgment on someone else, before you say “why don’t they want to work?” and why are they homeless… Let me tell you the story of these peoples’ lives, gathered firsthand.

As resident of Ferndale, I drive by these guys on a regular basis and they are always outside and asking for something. As a female who often drives alone, many times my first reaction is to lock my door and look away. Frankly, they frightened me, because some of them are not above pounding on my car window looking for a handout. Most of us were taught by our parents to never to talk to strangers, but these people have to talk to someone in order to survive.

I found myself one rainy night face-to-face with a homeless person at this very intersection that I’ve crossed so many nights before. Normally I would have been scared. But on this night, I happened to look down and noticed he wasn’t wearing any shoes. This broke down the fear that I would normally have, and brought him into the realm of being human, in need of a simple act of kindness.

From that night on, I was curious. I wanted to find out something more about them, who they were, and how they got there.

I took a day and went with my editor and we spent the day on the corners of these streets among them. We interviewed different men of diverse backgrounds who are all what we refer to as “homeless.”

We first met William. He is one of the oldest veterans of this corner and holds the highest seniority in a system of hierarchy among these men. With his seniority, he gets his choice of corner, meaning he chooses the one with the highest traffic and this is his domain alone.

William, 43, swept the street corner and turned over paint buckets for us to sit on. A former musician whose father played with blues legend Muddy Waters, William found himself homeless after a long struggle with colon cancer and resulting medical bills. This once-proud homeowner was the sole caregiver for his dying mother, hailing from a family with a long list of mental disorders and drug addictions. After she passed away, he found himself alone.

After staying with friends and struggling with his illness, he found himself without a job, cast to the streets for survival. When asked what he would like people to know about him, he replied, “We are human too, all someone’s son or daughter, mother or father. We need understanding, compassion and mercy.”

It was bitterly cold that day, and William offered me a blanket to warm me as we talked. As we sat, he showed us pictures of his childhood, including a photo of him as a baby being held by the famous country singer Minnie Pearl. He has lived on this corner for three years; he often seeks refuge in the warming center of the local churches and he is trying to get off the streets.

When asked what people can do to help his situation, he says that “Mercy and compassion is what we need”. He also mentions a list of items that would be helpful to anyone in his situation, including long underwear, hand warmers, socks, gloves, and McDonald’s gift cards.

Next, we meet Zach, 24, at the nearby Starbucks on 8 Mile. We offer him anything on the menu, but all he wants is a simple coffee to warm himself. He has been living on the streets for just under a year. He’s a recovering drug addict who is proud of his sobriety, but admits it’s hard and he struggles with his addiction. Although he is relativity young, his parents have

disowned him, leaving him to the streets. He sometimes works at The Golden Gate Cafe and Innate Healing Center for local chiropractor and revolutionary, Dr. Bob Pizzimenti, who is well- known for rehabilitating the homeless and providing them work and hot meals.

When asked, Zach echoes William’s sentiments for those in their situation. He explains, “Just do what you can to put a smile on our faces. Like, one time these cute girls spent the day giving out Easter baskets, they were filled with fruit roll ups and granola bars, it was really cool.” He also mentioned he could always use items like art supplies, music (keeping busy and being able to create is incredibly therapeutic in his situation), clothing, blankets, survival gear, and sleeping bags.

Local business owners Chris and Tiffany Best of the Rustbelt Market have offered to accept donations on Saturdays and Sundays to benefit the homeless around 8 Mile and Woodward. If you feel yourself inclined to help out, they are offering a safe and accessible way to contribute to Ferndale’s homeless population and to facilitate making our city a better place. Warm your own heart by helping someone stay warm this winter.

We never know where life will lead us. Some of us live life carefree and never dream of the day when everything we’ve worked hard for is taken away in the blink of an eye.

Edwin is 51-year-old African-American man whose last name just happens to be “Luckey,” and that is how so many of us know him around town. Lately, his life was anything but. Not so long ago, Edwin Luckey was happily engaged, with a beautiful daughter. He worked for a factory and was financially stable. But when jobs

were cut due to seniority, he lost it all, including his fiancé, his daughter, and contact with his family.

With no one in his corner, Luckey found himself in the streets without a home to go to. Low self-esteem and depression began to settle in, and the only friend he found to have his back against the vicissitudes of his new life was the bottle. He picked up drinking just to ease the pain of feeling like all hope was lost, and the alcohol would numb his body during the cold winter nights of Michigan, sleeping outside on concrete.

“These last four years have been up and down. Sometimes it’s sunny and sometimes it’s cold. It’s not just the weather that’s cold, but people are cold in how they treat the homeless,” says Luckey.

Looking at him across from me, you can tell that he suffers from hurt. It was hard to make eye contact. Lucky gazed at the ground as we reminisced on his past experiences. He says that the way he’s been treated over the years has left him with a complex which makes him feel less than human.

There is a quote that says “At the end of every dark tunnel, there is light,” and because of faith, that light became visible when he crossed paths with Brian Kramer.

Lucky has found a place in the hearts of many in Ferndale, and a lot of your neighbors have gone out of their way to help him. But Brian Kramer (owner of Rosie O’ Grady’s, One-Eyed Bettys, Diablos and Red Fox) has earned a special place in Heaven for a number of really remarkable personal sacrifices to help a fellow human being.

Brian took a liking to Luckey. He gave Luckey a sense of hope, and began to encourage him that he is somebody. He treated Luckey like a human being and would often take him out for coffee.

Brian was so determined to get Luckey back on his feet that he spent many hours and days assisting Luckey through what became a rather strenuous effort involved in getting a Social Security card and state I.D. But that’s not all – Brian also arranged for Luckey to get a room, and also a phone and now Luckey talks to his father, sisters and daughters every day. There’s more: Brian’s efforts also recently led to a reunion between Luckey and his father, who had been separated for two years. Brian is also teaching him job skills that he can use in future. Brian went to Home Depot and bought Luckey the supplies he needs to clean windows, giving him a way to earn a little money now. A recent Facebook photo features Luckey holding his first paycheck in years.

Luckey says, “The city of Ferndale hasbeenverygoodtome.Iama person that has always had a heart but hasn’t been able to show it. There are no mistakes in life and we are going to cross this bridge with learning the morals to life. I have been alcohol-free for four years.”

Ferndale truly takes care of its own. I asked Luckey if he had any words for our readers. He looked up, finally making eye contact, and said “Never give up!”

Sensei Jaye told me I’d picked a good time to reach out to her on behalf of Ferndale Friends. “We have an event coming up pn Monday, to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. There’s a pot-luck afterwards. You should attend. Share the potluck. We can talk then.”

Fast forward to Monday evening at Meijishi Martial Arts in downtown Ferndale, a space full of noise and energy as students of every age, shape, size, and gender prepared to share their skills. The program included demonstrations and excerpts from Dr. King’s speeches, reach aloud by the company. I liked watching the young people, who might have been hearing his words for the first time.

Senseir Jaye and her wife and partner, Guro Su, skillfully guided the event. The noise of the onlookers (chairs scraping, kids talking, coats rustling) didn’t seem to throw the students. They kept focus; their generosity and mutual respect was impressive. Student of all levels participate to music. The last demonstrations were executed in the dark with neon glow sticks design and handmade by student (and engineer) Wendy Stringer.

Certificates were awarded, and finally, we celebrated a round of “Happy Birthday” for Logan Stoll, one of the students. The student did pushups as they sang! “Ask about the pushups,” I scrubbed.

During the potluck, I chatted with Jaye and Su. Jaye started training in 1971. She founded Mejishi at Six Mile and Woodward in 1979, open to all but geared toward self-defense for women. Twenty-six years ago, Mejishi moved to Ferndale; a great space, but Jaye worried that moving out of Detroit might discourage African American students from continuing their training. She spoke of a different Ferndale, “with only about 50% occupancy on None Mile” before the gay and lesbian community discovered the area and grew it into the diverse, creative town of today.

Jaye then encouraged me to mingle with students, starting with black belt Karen Brow, who has trained with Jaye since 1979.

Sensei Jaye is among the founders of The National Women’s Marital Arts Federation, which sponsors a camp every summer (this year in Lansing) and certifies self-defense instructors. The MLK celebration started about twelve years ago. Other annual events include the karate-thin for kids, held in the spring, and participation in the Ferndale Memorial Day Parade and Ferndale Relay for Life.
