SAT DEC 1 | DOWNTOWN FERNDALE
85th Anniversary of the End Of Prohibition
FERNDALE’S DOWNTOWN WILL AGAIN COMMEMORATE THE DAY, in December, 1933, that Congress and President Franklin D Roosevelt passed the 21st Amendment to the Constitution ending prohibition, by enjoying legal libation and a taste of history. Venues will decorate with a 1930s flair, and offer special drink prices. Staff and patrons are encouraged to wear period costumes (gangsters, flappers, rum-runners etc.).
Two years ago, eight watering holes and a half-dozen volunteers raised almost $3,200 for the Ferndale Goodfellows, who offer assistance to needy families during the holiday season. Off-duty police officers work with the fire department and other service organizations as part of Good Fellows to en-sure every child is warm, sheltered, fed and have a toy for the holiday.

Donations will be collected through “passing the moonshine jug” possible cover charges at some venues and through corporate contributions. Sponsors have included: Tito’s Vodka, Sneakers, Howe’s Bayou, Danny’s Irish Pub, The Bar Down Stairs, Green Thumb Garden Center, John R Glass of Troy, Sucher Tire Service, Dynamic Dents, Twisted Tavern, now Boogie Fe-ver Cafe, Oakland 115.com, Ferndale Friends, Tiffani & Tom Gagne, Craig Covey, Councilman Greg Pawlica and Councilman Dan Martin. WINTER 2019 | MAGIC BAG
AntiFreeze Blues Festival
THE 25TH ANNUAL ANTI-FREEZE BLUES FESTIVAL is a local, Ferndale-based, two-day festival organized by the Detroit Blues Society. The festival home has been the Magic Bag, where Willie Wilson has been the MC for each year’s celebration of traditional and new blues music.

The two-day event usually has a four-five band lineup for each day, and is strong in supporting our local Kings and Queens of the Blues. Last year’s lineup did not disappoint. Friday night featured Eliza Neals & The Narcotics along with Big Ray and The Motor City Kings, Jason Bone & Big Al Grebovic and Benny Reeves. Saturday night had Tosha Owens & Bobby Murray, RJ’s Soul Blues Gang and Jeff Grand & Johnny Walker. Headlining was harp master James Montgomery with the Detroit’s own guitar god Jim McCarty and his band Mystery Train. The tickets were $25 and a portion of the proceeds have historically always gone to support the Detroit Blues Society.

From watching the lively guitar antics of Detroit’s very own Jim McCarty who always draws a crowd, to the heart filled vocals and smile of Tosha Owens, the Anti-Freeze Blues Festival brings a mix of local and few international headliners together for two nights of blues bliss.

Past years’ line-ups have included Lazy Lester, Ana Popovic, Jim McCarty, Nikki James and the Flame Throwers, Al Hill and the Love Butlers, Johnnie Bassett and the Blues Insurgents featuring Alberta Adams, Madcat Ruth, Harmonica Shah, Gary Rasmussen, Larry Mc-Cray and many many more! In 2000 the event featured the beloved Pinetop Perkins, may he rest in peace.

The Detroit Blues Society was started in 1985. For more information on how to join, go to www.detroitbluessociety.org. Past blues board members have included R.J. Spangler, Nikki James, Tom McNab, Luther Keith and many more committed to the blues volunteers. See you next year in January for the 25th Annual Anti-Freeze Blues Festival!

WINTER 2019 | DOWNTOWN FERNDALE
Ferndale Blues & Music Fest
ONE OF THE LONGEST-RUNNING AND POPULAR WINTER EVENTS in Southeast Michigan is the Ferndale Blues & Music Festival. This great, nine-day event has been held every year since 2001. Founded by Craig Covey along with Monica and Larry Mills, the event was created to bring music to the community in the dead of winter, to promote the downtown and its businesses, and to raise money for important local youth programs.

Each year, the Festival features up to 70 con-certs and events at a dozen or more venues over the course of nine or ten days. The Music Festival grows in stature and popularity each year. Expenses are kept low. Ferndale’s nightclubs, restaurants, comedy clubs, coffee-houses, churches, schools and community centers are all invited to be part of the event. More than 25,000 people attend each year and more than 500,000 people see the promotions and news coverage. The festival runs the last week of January to the first weekend in February. Watch for details about 2018.

RENAISSANCE VINEYARD CHURCH
Ferndale Warming Center
THE FIRST WEEK OF EACH NEW YEAR, the Ferndale Warming Center opens to serve our local homeless neighbors. The Warming Center is a program of the Renaissance Vineyard Church, operated in partnership with the South Oakland Warming Center. Located in the RenVC building at 1841 Pinecrest (at 9 Mile, behind the Payless), the Warming Center is truly a community-wide effort, providing loving help to any homeless who come – typically ranging from 75-100 women and men. Our goal is to serve our guests with hospitality and dignity, providing a friendly smile, hot meal, and a safe place to sleep with warm blankets. We also offer access to a free clothing closet, and other kinds of limited services when available. We usually open our online volunteer sign-up as Thanksgiving approaches. To learn more about the program and how you can get involved, please call the church office at 248.545.4664 or visit www.renvc.com.

Story & Photos By: Jon Szerlag

WITH A DESIRE TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY, and the State of Michigan, one local resident has taken her passion for mysteries and puzzles to try to give unidentified remains in Michigan their name back, and possibly bring closure for their family.

Leslie Merritt recently started a group that meets in person to go online and perform research of unidentified remains in Michigan, and try to match them with missing persons in the state. “I want to give peace to families,” said Merritt. “I want them to not have to think every day of their lives if their (family member) is alive and out there.”

Merritt started by going to the web site www.NamUs.gov which lists missing people and information regarding unidentified remains. There are thousands of missing people and unidentified people throughout the United States, and Merritt focuses on only ones that are missing in Michigan, and in the Metro area if possible. She also likes to look at older cases.

The family and friends of those missing are never contacted while poring over the databases and doing other research. But if Merritt believes that she has a good case for a match, she will reach out to the detectives working the case and provide the information to see if they believe it should be followed up or not.

OE OF THE FIRST CASES MERRITT WORKED ON was the remains of an unidentified woman from the late 1980s. She went through all the minute details of the information provided and thought she had a good match. She also reached out to a forum, WebSleuths.com, to have them look over her investigation.

The detective working the case told Merritt that they checked the dental records of the woman she thought was a match, but they were not the same person. But it was going through these cases and having discussions on associated forums that made Merritt want to start a group.

“Whenever I would do a case, I would post on Web Sleuth so other people could take a look at it before I would send it to the police,” said Merritt. “That is why I thought a group would be a good idea, to have a lot of eyes looking at it.”

Merritt asked people on her personal Facebook if anyone would be interested. She did not get a response, so she decided to try Ferndale Forum. The response was much more than she was expecting.

“I was thinking it would only be a few people, but a ton of people were interested,” said Merritt, whose Facebook group has 85 members already. “It is really amazing with all the people who are here and their replies. They were really excited about it.”

NOW THE GROUP MEETS IN PERSON to go over cases and bounce ideas off one another. Merritt also has her own method, which involves a spreadsheet she created to help find similarities between the missing and unidentified persons.

“The whole point is to exclude the missing from the unidentified,” said Merritt. “If there is anything that is big that excludes the person, then you are done and have to go on to the next.”

Which can be hard, when dealing with missing people and after getting personally invested in the case. “It can be hard to give up because it definitely becomes personal,” said Merritt. “When you are really focused on a case, you really get to know the missing or unidentified person. I really felt like I was the voice for that girl (her first case), and I feel like I let her down. And there are no other leads in that case.”

Merritt remembered her first case where she thought she found a match, and how she started to wonder how no one could be looking for this person, or if the missing person was from another state or even Canada.

“I just want to bring peace to people, and I want to be the one who helps do that and solve that mystery,” said Merritt. “There are a ton of people that are identified, and it is hard to make sense of it because there are all of these missing people, as well. There have to be matches.”

The Facebook group is currently called The Ferndale Cold Case Group, and people can visit www.NamUs.gov to view cases of missing and unidentified people.

Nineteen people showed up for the first group meeting in Ferndale to look over a case involving the remains of an African American man found in the Detroit River in Ecorse, Michigan in 2014.
